By the Associated Press CHICAGO, January 24, Excessive supplies of top grades and a lack of confidence resulted fn declines in prices in the principal butter markets during the week. Receipts were un- usually heavy and buying demand was too Hght to effect a clearance of stocks. Decrease in production was indi- cated In reports of co-operative man- ufactures, those of the American Creamery Butter Association showing a decrease of 5.7 per cent from the corresponding week of last year and a decrease of 6.2 per cent from the pre- vious week. Movement out of storage was slightly lighter than during pre- vious weeks. Arrival of 4,000 boxes of New Zea- land and reports of consignments of 23,500,000 pounds from New Zea- land to England, some of which may be landed in New York, were weaken- ing factors at that market. FINANCTYAL.' TRADING IN WHEAT SMASHES RECORDS Week Sees Heaviest Buying in World’s History—Corn and Oats Off. By thie Associated Press. CHICAGO, January 24.— Extraor- dinary urgency of buying demand for bread grain is sald by competent ob- servers to have resuited in probably the largest world trade fn wheat this week ever known. Prices have made a corresponding big advance. As against a week ago the Chlcago wheat market this morning was 8% to 10% a bushel higher, with corn ranging from 1 decline to % galn, oats unchanged to % off and pro- visions 20 to 72 up. New Record Every Day. With foreign purchase of future de- liveries of wheat here much in evi- dence and with the Liverpool market at a new peak for the season, wheat smashed high price records here cvery successlve 24 hours, excepting only one single day. That exception was followed by the sharpest upturn of the week. The im- mediate occasion for this particular upturn was an explicit statement from a leading exporter in this coun- try that he and others prominent in the foreign trade were disposing of breadstuffs in Europe as fast as pur- chased In the United States. One of the many factors which gave over- whelming impetus to the upward swing of the wheat market was an officlal anfouncement that almost twice as much wheat, including flour, had been shipped out of the United States during the last six months as was the case a year ago. Sterling Another Factor. The rise of sterling exchange to the highest point in more than 10 years, together with likelihood that the Brit- ish pound would soon be at a gold parity, was also a notable stimulating influence. Possibility that a crop scare would develop later regarding domestic Winter wheat recefved spe- clal attention, too, in some quarters. Corn and oats were weakened by lack of demand for low-grade corn and by indicatlons of larger receipts. Some tapering off in the movement of hogs to market gave a lift to pro- vislons. COTTON QUOTATIONS "~ MOVE BUT LITTLE Early Decline Largely Made Up in Later Trading as Week Closes. ed Press YORK, January 24—An ac- cumulation of overnight selling orders weakened the opening of the cottor | market today. NEW ORLEANS, La., January The cotton market opened easier to- day despite Liverpool was about as due and first trades showed losses of 1 to 4 points. The undertone contin- ued bearish under the influence of the large ginning figures of yesterday. One of the unfavorable developments was the announcement of the largest New England mills going on a five- | day weekly schedule. New Orleans cotton futures closed steady at net advance of 5 to 12 points. October . December S CHICAGO GRAIN PRICES. CHICAGO, January 24.—Although wheat underwent a material setback in price soon after the opening to- day, the market quickly rallied and scored a sharp advance. The down- turn was largely due to an overnight accumulaticn of selling orders, but a house which yesterday led the sell- ing took a reversed position today and energetically helped to lift the market. Canadian crop estimates were construed as bullish, and so, too, were latest est!mates on the export- able surplus in Argentina. The open- mg here, which varied from un- changed figures to li-cent higher, with May 1.93% to 1841 add July 1.69% to 1.70, was followed by a drop to 1.921 for May and then by a rise to 1.95% for the same month. Corn and oats were governed chief- Iy by the action of wheat. After opening unchanged to %! off, May 1.33% to 1.33%, corn underwent a further sag and then made a decided advance. Oats started at 2 cents jawer to a shade up, May 613 to 61%. Later there were moderate general gains. Higher quotations on hogs gave a little firmness to provisions. NEW YORK, January 24.—The gold export movement switched to Aus- tralia yesterday with two shipments, aggregating $1,050,000, which Wall street bankers are inclined to believe will reach large proportion. The movement to the Antipodes, the first in years, was due solely to the ex- change situation between New York, Australia and London.
