HUGHES. CHANCE FOR SHREWD BUYER. In my last article T had something to say about rallroad stocks and their rating as investments. It {a rarely advisable to buy any stock when prices are rising with great rapidity and speculative enthusiasm Is at its height. That is to say, It is not ad vigable if investment is the purpose. Speculation is governed by a differ- ent rule. With that we are not con- cerned here. Investors will do bet- ter to select thelr common stock which they expect to retain over a long period in times of market de- pression. All this seems self-cvident, but it needs to be emphasized in times Iike these. There 1s another point deserving of attention in this connection. When interest is concentrated upon the stock market. Investment bonds are neglected and it is often possible for the shrewd buyer to pick up bargalns while nobody Is looking, so to speak. Bonds of investment quality have lit- tle or no speculative possibilities and becaure price fluctuations are narrow and slow they are not usually favored by traders who are anxlous for “ac- tion.” I am not referring to bonds of the highest and most conservative grade in this discussion. lIssues of that nk are responsive in market price only to changes in the current charge for money. There are, however, plen- ty of reasonably good bonds yielding a feir return in a position to be bene- ‘fited by Improvement in the financial affairs of the corporation of which they are obligations, but which are generally overlooked, while specula- tors are rughing to buy stocks of the same companies. This applies to rall- road bonds, and the condition 1 have THE EVENING STAR, WASHINGTON, D. C NEW YORK CURB MARKET Received by Private Wire BY WILLIAM F. HEFFERNAN. Preferred stocks on which dividends are now being pald, but on which there are large back accumulations, were rushed up to record prices all in | anticipation of good things to come, while the sound bonds of the same companies on which interest was be- ing earned and paid hardly moved at all. And yet if the outlook for that particular railroad was so much brighter as to justify the speculative advance in its stocks, its bonds had greater claim to investment merit than they had before. It will pay in- vestors to look into such price dis- crepancies. (Copyright. 1 GOSSIP BOOSTS STOCK. Western Maryland Strong on Re- vived Merger Talk. BY STUART P. WEST. Special Dispateh to The Sta NEW YORK, January 10—The sec- ond week of the new year has been pretty much like the first, with the exception that the Wall street specu- lation has been less violent, Money rates have come down as they nor- mally do with the return to the re- serve centers of funds which were at in the Autumn crop moving. Sterling Approaches Par. The advance in sterling exchange to the highest since 1915 has been an outstanding feature. It has fitted in with the best opinion, held for a long time past, that the essentfal require. ments had been fulfilled for the Brit- to par. In the first place the English budget was successfully balanced, 50 much so that It was practicable to reduce the in come tax Secondly, the British foreign trade into & position where the surplus of merchandise imports had ceased to run ahead of the so-called Invisible credits, meaning by this the Income due from forelgn securities, trom ocean freight charges, from tourist expenditures, and from the sale in América of new European loans. Finally, regular semi-annual pay- ments on interest and sinking fund had been assumed o the $4,500,000,000 jdebt owed the United States on ac- count of war borrowings. The change In government and the uncertainty of what would happen under a Labor held up for eight months the natural operation of these eco- nomic factors. Many European Oferings. Our market, to be sure, has not been unfamillar during the last few years with this sort of thing. But it looks now as if American investors are going to be asked to absorb in a lavge way the offerings of European corporations, of which, so far, they have had comparatively little taste. The recent loans for account of the German industrialists have been es- pecially significant. With the Dawes {plan in effect, with European curren- cles stabilized for the first time since the war, and with economic recovery proceeding slowly but surely, there is an invitation for American capital to accept the high bids offered from the other side, not in preference to, | but in competition with, the low bids offered over here. Market Counts omn Great Boom. The data relating to business con- dition continue generally favorable. With the esception of the wage-cut- ting in the New England textlle mills. there has been nothing to mar the pic- ture of graduaily expanding prosperity, originating chiefly in the astonlshing change for the better during the last | three-quarters of a year in the situa- tion in the agricultural States. Pro- duction Is increasing and commodity prices are going un. The indlcations are that the first three months of 1925 will be a profitable perfod in most lines of industry and the same holds good for the outlook during the second quarter. Against this is the tremendous rise which has occurred in little more than twdo monthis on the stock exchange. Has this movement got too far ahead of the trade situation? From all past experience it would seem that 1t ha been excessive. At all events this statement may reasonably be made | that the business good times so free’y | predicted rfor the new year, wilt have || to be unusual in order to justify the | rice which has occurred on the stock ‘:xchnu;a since election day, (Copyright, 1925.) | ! | Young turkeys, 35a40; old, 3 Direct to The Star Office dition to the advance of over 8 points Friday, in Standard Gas and Electric 8% per cent convertible bonds was coincident with the great strength In the stock on the stock exchange! WEEK SEES STOCKS " HEHEST I YEAS Recovery in Popular Issues Partly Due to Extra Good Trade News. By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, January 10—The stock market opened this week with one of the most drastic reactions since the post-election boom started, but thereafter made sharp recovery with the result that United States Steel common, Baldwin and many other popular issues were carried to their highest levels in years. Monday's sell- ing was generally described as the correction of a weakened technical position, resulting from the specu- lative excesses of the previous fort- night. - . iood Trade New: Financial and trade news this week was constructive in character. ¥ in- cluded the establishment of the high- est ral by sterling exchange since bringing it within 8 cents of parity. The return of 2 per cent call money, the lowest official rate reached last year; reports of expanding steel operations; maintenance of heavy treight traffic and a gist of favorable dividend news, including incfeased payments by the Atchison railroad and the American Smelting and Re- fAning Company. Steel shares were under heavy ac- cumulation as a result of trade pre- dictions that operations would soon reach 90 per cent of capacity and that the monthly tonnage statement of the United Steel Corporation, due today, would show another enormous increase in unfilled orders. United States Steel crossed 124 to its best price since the “war baby” days of 1917, Interest in Ol Shares. Revival of speculative interest in the oil shares followed the publica- tion of the weekly report of the Amer- ican Petroleum Institute showing only a slight increase in crude pro- duction, despite the increased drilling activity in the new Wortham fleld in Texas. The statement of the Secretary of Agriculture, that compared with European prices, wheat was too low rather than too highs in America, focused attention on the mail order and farm implement .machinery shares, most of which registered sub- stantial improvement. ————— DAIRY PRODUCE. Special Dispatch to The Star. WELLESLEY HILLS, Mass., Janu- ary 10.—Three years ago I was se- verely criticized by many insurance men because 1 advised certaln wealthy cllents to cash In a portion of their life Insurance. I pointed out’ that good securities were then very low and that it was good busi- ness for a man to have as much as possible of his money in bonds. I made It clear that no fhsurance should be canceled which in any way jeop- ardized adequate protection for one’s family. I was referring to Insurance taken as an investment. Since that time securities have risen sharply in price while life ingurance is obtain- able for the same figure. As the price of stocks and bonds climbs upward life insurance becomes more attractive as an investment. Of course It has been only during recent years that life insurance has been 50ld as an investment. It started like fire insurance and other forms of in- surance, as a method of mutual pro- tection. Men took out what they needed In order to take care of their families in case of death. It has only been in recent years that Insur- ance has been taken out for corpora- tions, business houses and estates. Protective Insurance Urged. Of course, protective Insurance should be taken out by every one to a certain amount, and should never be canceled, cashed in, or switched. If, however, a man gets enough fnsur- ance to take care of his family any additional Insurance really becomes an investment rather than insurance. Some life insurance men may dis- agree with this distinction, but I am sure every fair-minded analyst would make it. I mention this distinction because, not being an insurance ex- pert, it is only in relation to such in- | vestment insurance that I have any right to speak. 1 have always advised the purchase of insurance for protection, irrespec- tive of what price securities are sell- Ing for and whatever the conditions in the security market. A man who needs protection should take out in- surance. The only disagreement I have had with insurance agents is due to the fact that investment insurance is less attractive when security prices are low, and more attractive when security prices are high. Be- cause Investment insurance is always at the same price, it must be judged by what the same money will buy in other forms of investment. In a way It is the means between high and low of the security market. This very fact, that It is & means, is the reason that the large insurance co'mpsnlex are so strong and insurance so safe. Attractive an Investment. Whether or not insurance agents will agrec with me as to which was the better investment three years ago. insurance or securitles, I am sure they will agree with me now when I say that insurance as an Invest- ment is becoming more attractive | each day. That is to say, as security | prices go.up, insurance, which re- | mains at a constant figure, becomes more attractive as an investment The truth is that when stocks and bonds cross the average normal line on the upward movement insurance becomes an attractive investment. This especially applies to 20-payment life and various forms of endowment insuranc which get a fixed sum of money on a apecified date. 1-belleve that 1925 will be a good SON. sea higher prices than they have already reached, but 1 also believe that investors should take account of stock as to their Insurance hold- ings. No man should have all his investments in stocks, bonds, insur- ance, real estate or any other one thing. Diveraification Best Method. All of one’s capital in Government bonds is not a sane method of in- vesting. Diversification is the basls of the soundest method of investing The point I wish to make today Is that in diversitying consider ineur- ance as a possible investment for a portion of your surplus funds during 1925, In purchasing endowment insurance use some sense as to maturity. For instance, in paying a $20,000 endow- ment policy a man should consider I his age in determiming the duration of the policy. It is apt to be more dangerous than beneficial to have a $20,000 20-vear policy mature when he is 40. On the other hand, It is unreasonable for a man of 50 to take out a 20-year policy In taking out a $20,000 ‘endowment | policy it is beat to arrange the ma- turities so that $2,000 will come due when vou are 60, $2,000 when you are torth until you are 70. Then as you can afford additional insurance have it mature in a similar series of years beginning when you are 70. I am very hopeful of the insurance business for the next few years. 1 belleve all the large companies will do a record business, and wide-awake, their companies. tic on the stocks of most of the larger Insurance companies. The insurance business has develdped to stupendous proportions, yet it is still in its in. fancy when judged by its possibili- tles. Moreover, under careful Gov- ernment supervision of the insurance companies, and the fact that they are officered and directed by capable, con- scientious men, should make their se- curities as well as their policles sound investments fer a portion of vour aurplus funds. Baltimore and Ohio Railroad earned the dividend on its common stock nearly twice last year, and many well informed persons in the financial district predict that if activities con- tinge in the steel industry and the coal trade improves to the extent ex- pected the company will set a new high record for earnings this year. Last year the company refunded $87,000,000 of low interest bearing ob- ligations on terms regarded as highly ditisfactory, although the Interest rate was higher than the old issues here. The company still has $45,000,000 maturities this year, but bankers say the financing operation will not be difficult. Stock of Record. 2 J 20 £ Jas, 12 Dec. 20 Par- able. Feb.
