WITH PRICES FIRM Railroad Liens Lead Active Trading in Today’s Brief Market. BY GEORGE T. HUGHES, Special Dispateh to The Star. NEW YORK, January 10.—Bonds closed the week firm, not only specu- lative, but high-grade issues as well. Libertles held their gains of the week, which have been uniform throughout | the 1jst, responding to the Indications of easier money. Nor has any liqul- dation come into the high-grade sav- Ings bank rails, and quotations for this group have been practically sta- tionary, Indicating there has been lit- tle selling by the banks, notwith- standing the low return these obli- gations afford. The most impressive feature of the market is the firmness In the middle and second-grade {ssues. “olorado and Southern 43%s is an ex- amplo of one of the hest of these bonds selling today at the high point for more than a vear. Investment is- sues nsiderably lo r in grade were in better demand this week. Trading Active Today. Active speculation continued today in the high-yielding rails with two leaders, one the newly listed Denver and Rlo Grande Western refunding 63 of 1955, which attained a new high on this movement under heavy trans- actions, and the other the short-term New Haven bonds, the 7s selling at par in large blocks after having had a substantial rise yesterdsy. The strength in the New Haven fssues Is founded upon the assured suceess of the refunding plan. St Paul 4s of 1925 were also at one time fractionally higher today, but hero there is yet doubt about the re funding operation. When the de tails of the plan are finally made known large fluctuations in these bonds may be expected, as there is believed to be a heavy speculative interest both ways. Renewed inter- est In N. G. N. adjustments and in Missouri Pacific general 4s was evi- dent today, as it has been all the week. The first named is up about a point and a half on the week. Lending Rail Insues. Among the most active railroad is- sues have been the convertible bonds, such as New York Central 6s and Chesapeake and Ohlo convertible & The Central 6s, selling today at 11 were up 4 points on the week. Con- version privilege expires May 1 mext. Chesapeake and Ohio convertible &s at 109% today were up 2% points on the week. Forelgn bonds have lagged behind the general list all the week, but they showed a better tome today, United Kingdom 5%s of 1937 at 106 were up % of a point on the week. The 58 of 1929 equaled their record high to- These move with sterling ex- change. New offerings this week have been very heavy, due largely to the $125,- 000,000 American Telephone and Tele- graph 6s. Financing for German in- dustrial companies is expected shortly. CHICAGO GRAIN PRICES. CHICAGO, January 10.—Notwith- standing that this was the calendar date on which tradition favored the selling side of the wheat market, wheat prices today moved up brisk- ly during the early dealings. Pur- chasing was most conspicuous on the part of a house which recently was a largo seller. One of the incentives to buy was announcement that No. 2 red wheat, the ordinary contract grade here, had reached $2.02% a bushel at St. Louls, the highest price there yet this season. Estimate: were also current that the Europea: bread grain crop is 8,000,000 to $,000,- 000 tons less than the total a vear| ago. Opening prices, which varied from unchanged figures to 13 cent off, May 178% to 179 and July 1.53%, were followed by an upturn which carried Ma yto 1.80%. Corn and oats averaged a little higher, sympathizing with wheat. After opening unchanged to 3 cent down, May 1.29% to 1.29%, the corn market scored moderate gains. Oats started unchanged to % cent lower, May 61% to 61%, but soon ad- vanced. In line with hogs, the provision market held about steady. WHEAT— Low. Coxev vor BONDS sroce st HOUSING SHORTAGE STEADILY REDUGED Most Tenants, However, Fail to Reap Benefits by Reduc- tion in Charges. RY J. C. ROYLE. Special Dispateh to The Star. NEW YORK, January 10.— The shortage of dwellings throughout the United States has been steadily de- creasing for the last six months, but tenants in most Instances have to dig just as deep Into the family ex- chequer as ever when rent day comes around. The decline in need for busi- ness structures has Leen even more marked, but business men in only a small percentage of the representa- tive centers had had their rentals lowered. 1In both cases the indication of increased business activity and prosperity in the next six months forecasts few changes downward. A survey covering 259 cities shows that at present only per cent of thesé have housing shortages, while the needs of 43 per cent are fully supplied. When the vear opened, however, 65 per cent of the repre sentative centers announced rents sta- tionary, 17 per cent showed advances and 18 per cent had reductions. The fall in rents was most marked in the North Central section of the country, where 50 per cent of the cities have lower rent levels. On the other hand, 62 per cent of the cities in the South- east showed advances. Single Dwellings Demanded. There is more demand for single family dwellings at this time than for any other class of structures, but even those cities which report short- ages {ndicate that the undersupply is slight. This fact indicates, how- ever, that in the next 12 months the Rreatest increase in real estate ac- tivity will be sort The larger cities are fust catching up with the needs for dwellings, the smaller cities still are far from reaching a normal ratio between de- man and supply. It is an interesting fact that scores of the smaller cities indicate a lack of apartment houses. Even the suburban districts, which formerly were composed of small homes for the most part, now are building apartments. noticeable at Summer and Winter re- sorts and in the sections within com- muting distance of the larger cities. | Overbullding Noted. In 27 cities there has been over- building of one type or another in the last few months and it is easy to overestimate the importance of the present deficiency in other places In only 26 per cent of the repre- sentative cities is there a lack of business structures. In spite of that fact business rents jgave advanced in 45 per cent of these, are stationary In 47 per cent, and have fallen. in only 8 per cent. The decreases havé been mostly in the South Central part of the country, where 1d- lords dropped charges in $6 per cent of the cities. & NFILLED U. S. STEEL ORDERS INCREASE 1a Associated Prees.
