Now, the large capitalist needs no advice from me. He knows what chances he can afford take and what stocks or bonds will best round his security list. The small-sai- arled man or wage-earner may not have a large sum to invest at this or any other time, but it is far more im- portant to him that he make no mis- take than it is to the rich man. This seems a good time, therefore, to re- capitulate the principles which gov- the tradi- nt. Men of jern a choice of securities T find that too many of the in- quirers who come to me for sugges- tions are consldering stocks, dazzled by the advauce in the stock market which followed the election. They want to buy something that “is golng up.” In other words, it i the spec- ulative lure and not solid investment worth that attracts them. Undoubt- edly there are plenty of stocks which some day will be quoted higher In the market place than they are today. It Is equaliy certain that there are many stock: that soomer or later will be quoted lower. I know that I am in no position to separate the two groups with a degree of cer- tainty and I doubt whether many of my readers are. Meanwhile, T do know that there are plenty of sound honds and good preferred stocks to be had, yielding anywhere from 5 to 6% per cent, and that these are being overlooked by the people who need safety before anything else. So my earnest advice to those who have small sums to invest atdhis time of vear is that they be cons<ervative in thefr ideas of what is a fair return on their money, knowing that such conservatism will richly in the end. Above all do not be led into ihe fatal error of buying promotion stocks, that is to say, stocks in new concerns, which have only the rosy dreams of the sellers of tie stocks to recommend them. Ouce in a hun- dred time: you may win at that sort of game, the other ninety-nine times you will lose.
