LECTURE ON FLOWERS L INTE R “Interpreter of Gardens” to Be Heard by Arts Club Next Tuesday Evening. Benjamin Johnston at the Arts . December 30. Miss France will deliver le Club Tuesddy evening Miss Johnston, who has been called he “Interpreter of gardens.” will talk about “Garden Love and Flower Leg- end,” and her lecture will be accom- panied by colored sildes which she has gathered from all parts of the world. A resident of Washington and for many years engaged in magazine work here, she at first illustrated her little stories with sketches from her wn pen; but later, realizing its ever- increasing possibilities, she devoted herself to photography. At this time her studio, with its rose and wistarfa covered doorway, was situated in the garden of her father's houze on V street, and here she was known to mapy prominent people. Miss Johnston studied for two years at the Julien Academy in Paris, aft- erward perfecting her technique at the Smithsonian Institution. At the time of the St. Louis expo- sition in 1904 the purple ribbon of the Palmes Academique was conferred upon her by the French government. In 1900 she received a gold medal from the same source. In Miss Johnston's hands garden photography has become a fine art, and her pictures of gardens, old and new, in all parts of the world form n-collection of rare beauty.
