GOFF, FAMED JURIST, DIES AT 76 New York Supreme Court Justice Before Whom Many Celebrated Cases Were Held. By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, November 10.—John W. Goff, former fustice of the Su- preme Court of New York, died here vesterday at the age of 76. Justice Goff was born in Wexford, Ireland, in 1848 and came to this j country in early childhood. Admitted to the bar in 1870, he became assist- ant district attorney of New 1588 und served in that three years. Supreme Court from 1907 to 1918. One of the most celebruted cases tricd before him was the trial of the alleged killers of Herman Rosenthal, gambler, for whose murder in 1912, ‘Gyp the Blood” Horowitz, “Leftie Loul Rosenberg, “Dago Frank® Clroficl und “Whitey Louis” Seiden schner, were clectrocuted. Police Lieut. Charles Becker, Impli- cated n the killing, was convicted before Justice Goff, and sentenced to death by him. He later appealed but was again convicted. . In the days following the war while the terms of peace were being discussed he was one of the foremost exponents of the Irish republic in this country. His activity in behalf of the case of De Valera and Michael Collins was tireless, As chairman of varfous committees of Irish societies favoring the forma- tion of a republic, he made frequent speeches, presided at mectings and Interviewed officlals of the United States, presenting his case.
