Fate of the proposal for a consti- tutional convention in Tennessee Is in doubt. Early returns gave a ma- jority against the proposal and later advices swung the advantage to the affirmative side, but by a narrow margin, and with the returns yet in- complete, the official count will be necessary to dectde. The latest tabu- lation gives the conveution proposal a lead of 1,200 votes. By a vote of approximately three to one Alabama favored seven amend- ments. Perpetual exemption from poll tax will be granted to all World War veterans and authority is given for forming drainage districts, good roads and sea wall districts in the State. A'number of amendments with more local than State significance also were authorized Loulsiana’s constitution is only a few years old and for some vears it will be necessary for the entire State to vote on many local amendments, 13 amendments being on the ballot at this election. The only proposed change of more than local interest was a proposal, adopted without serlous opposition, whereby penstons of Confederate veterans will be in- creased. The vote in favor of limiting the State-debt was decisive, as was the vote for making sinking funds inviolate for the purpose set aside. The vote on the question of increasing salaries of members of the General Assembly was clase. A heavy vote was polled in favor of homestead tax exemption. In addition to the far-reaching amendment against income and in- heritance taxes, Florida carried an amendment authorizing the Legisla- ture to provide a uniform rate of taxation and for specia! rates of taxation on Intangiblé property not to exceed 5 mills on the dollar and to exempt from taxation property owned for municipal, educational, scientific, literary, religlous or chari- table purposes. MARYLAND FOR BONUS. Vote Reveals State in Favor of Veterans’ Award. By the Associated Press. BALTIMORE, Md., November 10.— The overwhelming victory -at- the polls last Tuesday in favor of the constitutional amendment for aid or adjusted compensation for war vet- erans, paves the way for leglslative enactment of measures looking to that end. The general assembly two years ago passed a soldiers’ bonus for Maryland World War soldiers and sailors, but opponents of the act took the matter into the courts, with the result that the measure was de- clared unconstitutional. The amendment, which last Tuesday by more than 40,000 majority, removes the prohibition now in the State constitution which prevents the State from pledging its credit for the raising of moneys which could be used for the ald or as adjusted compensation to those citizens of the State who with honor served their country or State in time of war.
