WCAP TO PRESENT MUSICAL PROCRAM Wardman Park Stringed Quartet Will Be Feature on Air Tonight. Music, instrumental and vocal, pre- dominates on the two-hour program tonight of WCAP. The chief attrac tion is a concert by the Irving Boern- stein Wardman Park Hotel String Quartet, under the direction of Moe Baer WCAP will go o'clock, with a short M. Mooney, Washington master, on “Early Mailing. by Miss Frances Guteliu pianist, will follow. The vocalists on include Josephine Huber, Leona Anthony, soprano Lrose Durkin, baritone, soloist at the Church of the Epiphany. C. STUDENT EXHIBITS UNIQUE RADIO DEVICE Receiving Set Mounted on Finger Ring Placed in Collection at Chicago Show. CHICAGO, November 10.—A re- ceiving set mounted on a finger ring, made by Hermann Burgess, a Wash- ington, D. C., high school student, is among the collection of the smallest workable radio devices in the world, which will be one of the interesting features of Chicago's third annual radio show. Opening tomorrow after- noon in the Coliseum, the show will continue throughout the week. Some of the tiny receiving sets are built on the linés of the old open style apparatus, while others are mounted on dimunitive panels which are in turn fastened upon little cabi- nets. None weighs over an ounce, but radio broadcasting can actually be received on all of them. In fact, workability is one of the require- ments for admission to the “Minia- ture Model xhibit.” One receiver, for instance, about the size of a small marble, has & per- fect little tuning coil, a crystal de- tector and two switches which touch minute contact points on a Lilliputian pancl. This set was built by Mrs. Edith Bornemarn of Bethany, Nebraska. Another, even smaller, built by T. L. Cranston of Toronto, Canada, has a flat wound coil and s incased in ivory. How to Build the Ideal Two-Tube DX Loud Speaker Set. Part L Many fans who have read over and over again the statement that at Jeast three tubes are required to get volume enough on a set for dancing may be inclined to be skeptical when 1 say that all that is required to get volume enough to suit the most con- firmed volume hound’is a two-tube set, properly designed and péperly built, using good parts throughout. To begin with, let me explain that the two-tube set which I am about to describe is really equivalent to an ex- ceptionally good three-tube set of the rogenerative type, inasmuch as the first tube is reflexed, amplifying first at radio frequency and then at audio frequency the signals received on the antenna system. The stage of radio frequency has an effect equivalent to making local stations of stations 500 and more miles away, so that not only the local but also the distant stations can be heard with exceptionally good wolume on the loud speaker. Using only the first tube of this set I have listened repeatedly to Pitts- Durgh on a loud speaker while using the set in New York, a distance of nearly 460 miles. On local stations the volume is tre- gmendous, programs being heard clearly througheut a large six-room gpartment. Reproduction Prohibited. Local stations can be tuned in clearly on one tube, using a ground |alone, although, of course, the tuning ‘ls very sharp. | One of the greatest advantages of |the set is its very simple control. There are only two adjustments to make once the current has been turned on to the proper point by the rheostat, and only one of these ad- justments, the condenser adjustment, is a critical one. So the set can actu ally be termed a single-control set. All stations within the broadeast- ing wave lengths are tuned-in easily one after another in order of their wave-length ranges by adjusting the variable condenser through its range. | | The diagram of the receiver shown herewith. First Stage Reflexed. The first stage is a straight reflex stage using a fixed crytsal detector. The second stage consists of a stage of straight audio frequency amplifi- cation, using a C battery, 20, and a .0005 mrd. fixed condenser, 17, in the grid circuit. The C battery and the condenser are absolutely necessary to avold distortion. The C battery should be of the standard 4l%-volt type. Various values of condensers can be used across the grid circuit of the tube. A value less than .0005 will make the circuit rather critical and inclined to howl when the rheo- stat resistance is_cut down, thus al- lowing a greater flow of current. The advantage of a lower value lies in the fact that it is possible to use a lower value of current through the tubes, thus increasing their useful life. A higher value of capacity in this con- denser allows the rheostat resistance to be cut down to a greater extent, thus allowing a greater flow of cur- rent through the tube filaments and resulting in a slightly greater vol- ume. The sound obtained when a high capacity is used, however, is rather hollow. A value of more than 002 mrd. should mot be used Per- sonally, I like the results obtained with & value of .005 mfd. better than those obtained when higher values are used.
