SAN FRANCISCO, November 7.—At o popular bellefs regarding ise of the ballot were fallacious throughout the t in the presidential elec- “emininity, it was shown, orc pride in voting and pro- s election slackers than does ronger sex. Maybe the wholchearted manner in which femininity flocked to the ballot boxes here was just an appreciation of the fact that Call- fornia was one of the pioneers in giving them the right of equal suf- frage, but reports of similarly heavy Woman's vote cast in Oregan and Washington would indicate other- wise. Don’t Follow® Hubbles. Apropos the oft heard assertion that the rank and t wives vote as their male hal ate, such stuff must go into the scrap heap along with the aspirations of certain per- sons to the presidency. If there is any doubt there are dozens of cases 10 prove it which can be testified to by election boards right here in San® Irancisco—one of them is a matter | of police record. | Numerous husbands, it develops, ac- | companied their wives to the polls with the cvident intention of showing them how to mark their ballots. But the woman folk, it likewise de- veloped, are quite capable of dolng their own ballot marking. The in- stance which got into the police records, but in which no arrests were made, is typical of them all In this case, friend husband not only insisted on telling his helpmate how to vote, but insisted on accom- panying her into the curtained booth to see that his political views were faithfully followed. The wife oOb- jected and the election officials backed her up. The law in such cases was with the wife and the elec- tion officials, for it prohibits more than one person from occupying a voting booth at one time. The hus- band, however, was insistent and de- fied the election officials—until the police came and told him to wait outside. Later, when the wife had demon- strated the freedom of her political R 22222 2 2 22T, Hemstitching & Picot Edging Pleating Buttons Made to Order All Work Guaranteed ——— | thought to her heart's content, she greeted her husband with the decla- ration: “There! I told you I'd vote as I pleased.” The husband mutteéred something which sounded to eavesdroppers like “fool women” and they went their way still arguing. Marital felloity may still be a little strained in that same home today, but one woman at least demonstrated her importance at the polls. Down in Los Angeles a woman with a broken leg spent more than $40 for a i to take her to the polls, but lost her right of franchise because after hours of argument the election officers would not let her mark her ballot outside, and her in- Jury prevented her from going in- side the polls. Over in San Leandro, on the Oak- land side of San Francisco Bay, & 72-year-old woman walked six miles to cast her ballot. I did not get to vote at the two previous preaidential elections be- cause I was 1ll, but I'm going to vote this time,” she told the elec- tion officials. “It's every woman's businéss to vote.” Recorded in California's were the ballots of eight ocentena- rians. Six of them were women. Not even age, it seems, can deter the fe- male of the species from demon- strating that the right of suffrage to them is a prideful thing, and that voting in so far as feminine vote slackers is concerned—they just al ut. - Burglar Steals Jewels.
