COOLIDGE-DAWES CLUB ENROLLS THE PRESIDENT President Coolidge has been elected an honorary member of the Cool- jdge and Dawes Club of the Dis- trict of Columbia, which organiza- tion has the distinction of being the first one of that name to be formed in the present campaign. Samuel J. Prescott, president of the Republican State committee of the District, and personally in charge of the campalgn among tie voters in this city, in no- tifying the President yesterday of his election to this club, told him that the matter was formed and its name decided upon a few moments after the flash came from Cleveland, Ohio, that Gen. Charles G. Dawes had been nominated for Vice President, thus completing the party’s national tick Mr. Prescott at the same time pre- sented to the President a handsome £0ld_button, bearing the insignia of the Coolidge‘and Dawes Club. The Coolidge and Dawes Club now has a membership of more than 1,200 and its membership committee, under the leadership of Charles F. Crane, Charles Water and Mrs. Virginia White Speel, is aiming to have a membership of more than 3,000 before election day. — Cheap optimists are smiling when things are all serene; we sce them ingle-filing with hxgh and cheerful mien, the passing crowds beguiling with maxims smooth and keen. They feel like four-time winners in new, expensive suits, they've had abun- dant dinners, they’re smoking good cheroots; they say to sighing sin- ners: “Let sorrow shoot the chutes This life is fine and nifty, all wool and three feet wide; for every trou- ble, fifty great blessings are sup- plied; woe is infirm and shifty, just mile and it will slide.” Along the street called Easy the sunshine fakers dwell; and proverbs bright and breezy they give away or sell; but when the luck grows cheesy lhc) wring their hands and yell. It’s easy to be sunny when one is amply fed, and has his jam and honey to spread upon his bread, and forty kinds of money to paint the village red. But now and then a fellow turns up who makes a hit; his luck is always yel- low, misfortunes never quit; and still, serene and mellow, he smiles and does his bit. Undaunted and untiring he goes his humble wa. with tranquil soul, requiring but lit- tle all his days, thus by his course inspiring the feebler-hearted jays. Of words our store is ample, they flood us day and night; on maxims we may trample by turning left or right; it is the good example that leads'men to the height. (Copyright) WALT MASON. 'W. H. Ramsey, an attorney at the De- partment of Justice, addressed the Washington Association of Credit Men at its weekly luncheon Tuesday at the City Club. Mr. Ramsey said me a sense of genuine eal ‘action “to note that the credit men's associations have standards above the mere sordid question of how much can be squeezed out of any particular situation for their respective houses, and above the prac- tice of debasing the Federal criminal — = | Imitation Optimists. -| b i - | courts to the level of a collection agency for bad debts.” Mr. Ramsey spoke of the three lines of Federal offenses most commonly com- mitted in commercial fraud, misuse of the mails, violation of the bankruptey laws and conspiracy. ““The merchant contemplating a fraud- ulent bankruptcy very frequently is, or professes to be, very ignorant of the three Rs of a common school education,” said Ramsey.
