Out of the numerous requests that have come to the National Park Serv- ice in the last few years for the Gov- i ernment to take over large tracts of ;land in scattered sections of the coun- i try and preserve them in their natural i state forever by converting them into { national parks, only one or two have i met with official approval. 1 Amonk them was a suggestion that {the South should have a national i park wherein might be represented tand p rved in their natural state i the flora and fauna that are common ‘to that section of the country. Such ia park would also have to represent {to some measure the nature of the buntry south of the Mason and dixon line. Many sites have been proposed, ome of which have already been dis- Jcarded and some that are under seri- L ous consideration. Those in charge of selecting a proposed site for the park are unanimous that such a park Should be situated in the Appalachian Mountains, and the State of Virginia offers many advantageous sites in its wide ra 4 . Bec of the natural beauties and fwonders that exist in_the vicinity of the Luray Caverns, that section has Ibeen nominated for the site, and the Government experts have left to sspend several days there to study the topography of the country and the animal and plant life that exists In it. Today the party is at Skyland, six miles from Luray, and in the next day or so will cover most of the pro- posed park area. i Get Officers’ Commissions. i Commissions in the Organized Re- serve Corps of the Army have been issued by the War Department to the -following: William H. Activities of the Cardosza Vocation- al School (colored) will be transfer- red to the Phelps School, on Vermont avenue between T and U streets, when the public schools reopen Mon- day for the new term. The Cardoza has been opcrated for boys 14 years of age and over who have completed the fifth grade of the elementary schools. The enrollment, however, has been small, and it was thought that since the trend of the population is to the northwest, and with a group of something like 50,000 colored people living within _easy walking distance of the Phelps School, that by locating the voca- tional school there, it would attract a much larger enrollment than has been the case at its former location. The purpose of the school is to give to boys practice in trades and such related knowledge as wlill enable them to shorten.the time of appren- - THE EVENING STAR, WASHINGTON, ticeship in a trade, to start at a high- er wage and with better prospects of success when apprenticeship is not required, and to acquire more than one phase of a trade in order to fit them to become journeymen. The trade subjects taught are auto- mechanics, bricklaying, carpentry, ma- shine shop practice, plastering and printing. The academic subjects re- quired with each trade are arithmetic. algebra, geography, history-civics, language, grammar, composition, reading, literature, spelling, mechani- cal drawing and physical training. Each trade course covers two years. Due to the fact that the academic re quirements of all the courses are the same as demanded in grades 6, 7 and 8 of the elementary schools, a boy upon the completion of one of the trade courses may enter the voca- tional section of the Armstrong Technical High School. The school will be ready to enroll students desiring to take up trade instruction, Monday. It will be known as the Phelps Vocational School. F. E. Parks jr., is principal. GAS STATION MAN ROBBED Two robberies at gasoline stations, one a hold up, were reported to po- lice last night. A man, thought to be colored, ap- proached the station of Frank M. McLaughlin, at 6th and K streets northwest, last night just at closing time, when McLaughlin was walking toward his automobile, and placed the muztzle of a gun against him, ordering him to drive to 6th street and New York avenue. There he went through McLaughlin's pockets, and took $300 in cash. Then the bandit ordered McLaughlin to drive on and escaped. Police were furnished with a description of the bandit. Johnston R. Zimmerman yesterday told police that his gasoline station, 1101 Rhode Island avenue, had been entered Tuesday night by breaking glass in the front door. The thief stole a revolver valued at $20 and a box of cartridges, besides $1.29 in pennies. W. H. WEST CO.
