J., September 5.—Miss Ruth Malcomson, entered in Atlantic City's beauty pageant as “Miss Philadelphia” yesterday ' was adjudged winner in the Intercity division of the rolling chair parade held on the board walk. “Miss Chi- cago” was second, and “Miss West Palm Beach” third. The float carrying “Miss Philadel- phia” was the largest in the pro- cession and depicted an old southern colonial home. “Miss Chicago” rode in a reproduc- tion of the “Broadway Limited lo- comotive,” while “Miss West Palm Beach” sat in a rolling chair elabo- rately decorated with palm leaves and oranges. “Miss Manhattan” was awarded first prize by pageant judges last night as being the most beautiful girl in evening dress in America. “Miss Santa z" was given second place and Johnston” third. “Miss Manhattan” was the favorite of the audience each time she appeared during the elimination. She wore a tight-fitting, low-cut evening gown of white satin, and carricd a massive fan of white ostrich plumes tipped with black. NOGALES, Sonora, Mexico, Septem. ber 6.—Public schools throughout the state of Sonora are closed as the re- sult of a general strike proclaimed by school teachers. The strike went into effect when the state failed to meet demands of the teachers for salaries due, amount- ing to approximately 100,000 pesos. CONGER, Minn., September §.—The State Bank of Conger, which two years ago had a reserve fund of $100,- 000, was closed today by the State banking department.
