16 'PAVING FUND FALLS FAR UNDER NEEDS Report of Highway Engineer Shows Many New Streets Left Untouched. Opening up of new outlying sections to make way for building development continued to keep ahead of street paving appro- vriations during the last fiscal year, . B. Hunt, engineer of highways, told the Commissioners in his annual report today. Tinactment of the gasoline tax Jaw, however, will result in greatly in- creasing street paving funds during the current 12 months anuJ thereby cnable the highway department make faster headws During the fiscal year ended June 30 last, the highway cngineer spént $2.186,614.66 on all classes of paving 1 repair work. The current appro- priation act makes approximately $2. $00,000 available for the highway de partment “The continued development of mew streets by builders, responsive to the building shortage, more than kept pace with the rather modest that could be made in pav streets in sthe Again Open All Saturdays, ing this class of entirely unpaved roadways,” said Engineer Hunt, re- ferring to last year. Sees Need for Larger Fund. Discussing - the need for larger appropriations to resurface worn-out asphalt streets, Mr. Hunt says: “Very little resurfacing of asphalt roadways was accomplished during the year for lack of funds, and the average age of all these pavements is now believed to be far beyond that of any other municipality; a condi- tion reflected, notwithstanding our efforts to the contrary, by a progres- sive deterioration in the safety and comfort of their use. More liberal funds for this resurfacing are plainly nceded.” An interesting feature of the report is Mr. Hunt's statement that the pav- ing of alleys is now more in demand than the laying of sidewalks, both of which classes of work come out of the same fund. Mr. Hunt believes the demand for paving alleys in ad- vance of sidewalks is due to the rapid |suburban development and the in- |crease in the number of alley ga- rages. There is a community demand, he said, for a larger annual allotment for sidewalk and alley paving. The rapid erection of homes on newly cut streets in the suburbs, the enigneer continues, made it necessary to spend a conziderable part of the Tump sum for repairs to roads and in laying temporary surfaces on these new streets. Approximately seven miles of tRese new streets had to be temporarily covered with old street material and cinders during the year. In some cases ashes collected by the strect- aning department were used. The engineer of high reported Day Starting Tomorrow "HAHN SPECIAL" Misses” and Chil, Sturdy, Rrown Full toes. A flower, fruit and vegetable exhi- bition will be held September 10 in connection with the community meet- ing for the award of honors In the annual lawn and garden competition held by the Rhode Island Avenue Citi- zens' Association. All residents of the locality are urged to contribute to the success of the exhibition by entering their floral and horticultural products and by visiting the show. The exhibition will be open to all flowers, fruits and vegetables grown by amateurs within the limits of the citizens' association, and all products must be from plants grown by the exhibitor. Two awards will be given in_each class. R. J. Haskell is chairman of the ex- hibition committee, associated with R. C. Goodhart, A. H. Englebrecht, J. H. Kesecker and J. P. Schumacher.
