JACOB H. DEWEES IS CLAIMED BY DEATH Union Veteran of Civil War, With Enviable Record, . Suc- cumbs at 93. Col. Jacob H. Dewees, 93 years old, a veteran of the Union Army durig the Civil War and a resident of this city more than 40 years, died at 'his |- residence, 606 Fifth strest, yesterday. Col. Dewees had an enviable record in the Union Army. He was com- missioned a captaid in the 13th Penn- sylvania Cavalry, April 28, 1862; a major, August 28, 1863, and a lleu- tenant colonel, July 15, 1864. He saw action at the battle of Win- chester, Va.; the battle of Gettys- burg, the Wilderness, at -Spottsyl- vania Court House, Va.,.and also at Cold Harbor. He was captured in action in 1864 and was confined first in the old Libby prison at Richmond, Va. and subsequently in prisons in Macon, Ga., and in Charleston, S. C. He was returned to his regiment, through an exchange of prisoners, in 1865. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Dewees, and a son, Joseph Dale Dewees, a railroad official and a resi- dent of Letonia, Ohio. Funeral services will be conducted at V. L. Speare’'s undertaking estab- lishment, -940 F street, tomorrow morning at 11 o'clock. Interment, with full military rites, will be in Arlington Cemetery. Members of the G. A, R. and the Loyal Legion, both of which he was a member, will take part in services at the grave. Three Killed by Train. SIMCOE, Ontario, August 22.—Mrs. Robert Bain and Mrs. Thomas Phil- lips, both elderly women. and the 4-month-old baby of Walter Bain were killed yesterday when struck by a Michigan Central train on a crossing east of La Salletto.
