August 21.—The Brazilian rebel vanguard, alleged to be composed mainly of Germans, Ital- ians and Spaniards, has been defeat- ed by the federals at Campo Grande, #ays a dispatch to La Naclon based o4 a telegram received in Rlo Janeiro frodn Gen. Nepomuceno Costa, com- manding the federal forces in Matto Crosso _state. The General reports that more than 50 rebels were killed and 64 made prisoners. There were 29 wounded among those captured. D., August 21.—Willlam J. Bulow of Beresford was nomi- nated as the Democratic candidate for governor at an executive session of the party's State central committee here last night following a protracted session, during the course of which names were proposed. Mr. Bulow's selection to head the Democratic State ticket follows thé recent death of Andrew Anderson, who was killed by a bull on his farm near Beresford, and who was a close personal friend of the new nominee. He is an attorney and was a State Senator from Union County for one term in 1899, Four years ago Mr. Bulow was appointed to fill a vacancy on the Union County bench. Loses Bobbed-Hair Suit.
