JTTACKED, ROBBED, WFE IS ACCUSED Husband Says Woman and Ex-Employer Assaulted Him on Auto Trip. By the Associated Press. CHICAGO, August 21.—Jay T. Ernst, Asheville, N. C.. found with his head battered on a suburban road yesterday, told the police he had been attacked by his wife, Earline, 19 years old, and Edward Rickert, 49, his erstwhile employer, who had robbed him of $145 and then fled in his automobile with Ernst's two children. Search was started for the alleged attackers. The police said Ernst told them he had left Asheville two weeks ago intending to go to Dallas, Tex., but Rickert had persuaded him to make the trip via Chicago, where Rickert's sister lives. He said Rickert told him he was sought by the police and for a week Rickert hid in the home of a farmer near Hannah, Ind. Ernst said he was returning Rick- ert to Chicago when the latter asked him to stop the machine and both got out. Suddenly Rickert struck him from behind with a jack handle until_he lost consciousness, officers said he told them. Says Wife Robbed Him. Before becoming insensible, Ernst said, he saw his wife kneel beside him and strip his pockets, taking his savings and some valuable papers. A passing motorist later found him lying on the road where his alleged attackers left him when they fled. Ernst said he worked for Rickert in Asheville, and when the latter's wife left him, allowed him to become & boarderin his home.
