- AROUND THE CITY By Nannie Lancaste: A woman was reading by an open window. It was a big window, +haded by a forest-green tree, with more trees across the way and with the sun flickering through the follage as if scattering zold dollars on the ~treet, like those <udden-rich spend- thrifts you hear, «bout but next to vever see. Also count in a breese and the thrill of ¥ being “on leave. The woman, with nothing to do and = all day to do it in, was digging deep down with Harold K. Philips in the Xcavations at Yu- catan, when— <plashi——came a shower through the screen. = You understand, of ~course, that when it rains while the sun is shin- ing 0Old Nick is beating his wife, but {or this time he was innocent, for the reason that the District, instead of Jupiter Pluvius, was on the job. It was a job that called for a white (ree doctor and three colored laborers, all of them on a truck, terious with coils and tanks, and with long- billed hose for each of them to Spray every branch of every tree as the wagon slowed along. It was a pun- gent something that rocketed up like silver mist. wet enough to drench the leaves with a tonic deadly to cater- pillars, but so health-giving to the trees as to insure Washington's repu- tation as the sylvan paradise of the land. And if you love trees because they shade you from the heat, and because they flutter their leaves in the Sum- mer winds, and because they remind vou, somehow, of those mansions not made by hands, you will take back any little objections you may have had to p: ng out your good money the last time taxes came around— and, . Knowing what the tree doctor is doing to the woozy villains that have already cobwebbed some limbs of vour own beloved Mrs. Sycamore at the gate (which her name is Martha Illen). vou say to yourself, because you feel that way S “God bless the District! Then you rejoin Harold Philips at Yucatan. * % % % HATEVER his mother’s intention may be, he is rearing himself to be a soldier. A woman came across him in the green-gray dusk of a Northeast park—a crumb of a kid in some older boy's out-grown cowboy suit on picket duty with a fence pale for a gun. There was no other child around, so the guard must have felt that his duty demanded extra vigi- lance—you never know what enemy may be lurking behind trees or crawling in the long grass—and by the rapt tenseness of him vou could tell that the order had been given to l:t no ome but Americans on guard tonight. There he marched, up and down, in the silent twilight—left, right; right, t; so many steps forward; then the military tw then =0 many steps backward; then do it all over again. And in the soul of him the valorous something that mak a soldier fol- low wherever a flag leads the way. It was so comically lendid that a loiterer watched from a little ,dis- tance—far enough to be out of dan- ger of the lone picket's challenge— And presently there came tearing up to him a small girl with long, grass- hopper legs. who must have brought him_the news of sudden armistice, for he changed his fence pale from a gun to a horse, and, having straddled it. galloped off beside her to a possi- ble supper. EEE ANTBODY find a wrist watch? A woman was telling another about it as they lunched the other day in a grill. It was a gift, and— fave You asked St. Anthony to find it for you?” The girl who put the question was as dead in earnest as if the saint were an active member on the police force, but the loser of the watch shook her head. “No, honey. Truth is, T didn't think of him at the time, and now it is too late. I inquired all around and put in an ad—-" “Well, ask him, him. But it was over a month ago.” 'Well, it won't hurt to give him a nce, and if it is best for you to have that watch he will get it back for you, all right. He's found lots of things for m “All right—I will. “Do it now. before sugaring those blackberries and say, “Dear St. Anthony, please find m: wrist watch. Was it gold or silver?” The loser of the watch owned to platinum, “Well, say, ‘Dear St. Anthony, find 'my platinum wrist Now, say it” he loser laid her spoon on the saucer and asked dear St. Antheny ase to find her platinum wrist ch. _“And what will T have to do for him if he finds it for me?" “Oh, he isn’t particular. Just so it's a good deed for some one else. let _me know if you get it, won't you?” And when the girl who believed so buoyantly in her patron saint had skipped off her way the woman who had lost her watch said to herself as she was going through the Smith- sonian Park—and not to herself, either: “Confidentially, dear St. Anthony, 1 don’t think you can nd it, but that's all right. I deserve to have lost that watch, because 1 knew the catch needed fixing. Still, if anybody believed in me as that girl believes in you, I'd try my best to make good for her sake.” And the present question is, What anyhow—go on, ou forget. Stop is St. Anthony going to do about it? * X X ¥ A YOUNG man was brisking along as if to keep a date with for- tune. <He had crossed the greenery of blossomy weedg, that ripple pond- like between the Union Station and some big hotels and had jumped a ditch that is going to be a gutter some fine day, when he noticed a bony old horse in the trash-cart business standing by what will be the curb. His dejected patience must have ap- pealed to the hurrying young man, for he pulled a bunch of grass and slipped it in the mouth of old Whitey-Gra: The horse munched his treat with a sudden interest in life that expressed itself in the flicker of its pallid ears and a gen- eral bracing up that stands for courage. ‘The young man sprinted on to wherever he was going, but another man, coming out of a hotel in time to catch the incident, also went over to the greenery, pulled a bunch of grass and slipped it into the mouth of old Whitey-Gray. ‘Which shows the force of exam- ple, good or bad. * % % x JLADIES with the magpie habit of hiding their belongings could doubtless show you what one-time fashion called a “basque.” Also one of them must have donated a brown one to a rummage sale, for it went to market the other morning on the back of a wisp of a woman, whom it fitted loosely fnstead of canning her in whalebone, for the reason that she was a positive bone. Women with a memory for past glories must have had their humorous smiles for a resurrected style that shows up today like a_ straitjacket, with its whalebone and hooks that allowed breathing at half rates only, but no passer-by made the wearer conscious of her hark-back until two girls came along. Each giggled at the woman as they approached her, and when they had passed both giggled behind her back. Look what's escaped!” “If she belonged to me, I'd chain her! Of course, when girls come to the giggling age they can’t help the selves any more than they can help the tears that usually come along later. Still, they might have consid- ered the fact that people have ears. For, by the sudden sagging of the old soul's step and by the way she suddenly caught at the frill of her basque. you could tell that the blow had fallen. Then she hurried out of the story. And that was all there was to it, except that the mothers of both girls probably walked that very street in basques, whaleboned and hooked and squeezed over laced-to- death corsets to make their waists look small. Also, Queen Fashion, be- ing of a temperamental turn, the first thing those girl know they will be wearing that same. You never can styles are concerned.
