DRY GOODS ORDERS GROW. BALTIMORE, July 25 (Special).— Better outlook for the wholesale dry oods business is seen by a number of Baltimore firms. Activity has in- eased materially during the last 30 days, particularly on tne part of nerchants in the South. The recent display of firmuess in the price of cotton is adding greatly to the con- fidence of both wholesale and retail dealers, it is asserted. The selling merely reflected the de- sire to take large profits which had been accumulated by those who had purchased at substantially lower prices. These realizing sales brought about declines of two points in Du- bilier and Ware Radio. Thompson and Hezeltine were also lower for a time. Radio Corporation, both old and new issues, continued to move for- ward on the belief that they had not shared to the extent of others in the upward movement. While the mar- ket elsewhere was firm, it was evi- THE EVENING dent that professional traders were more disposed to take profits than to increage long commitments. This re- sulted in some selling in the oil group, but declines were slight. Bear operators, ever ready to pounce upon the volatile Durant Motors, were suc- cessful in causing a break of 3% points, but only to have the stock rally to the previous closing level of 21%. Glen Alden Coal shares were again a feature on the side of advance and crossed 105 for a gain of more than 3 points. The-demand recently is said to reflect improved earnings and expectations of larger dividends in the future. Diamond Field Black Butte fea-| tured the low-priced mining shares, running up to 20 on the report that a new ore body assaying $149 in gold to the ton had been uncovered. kA S NEW_ YORK, July 25.—Following is an official list of bonds and stocks traded in on the New York Curb Market today: Sales in BONDS. thousands. ROYL Special Dispatch to The Star, NEW YORK, July 25.-—The large advertisers of the United States and many of the smaller ones as ‘pu are now laying out their advertistng for | the ensuing ye: reliable advertising agencies indicate that the volume of advertising will be materially increased during the next months, especially in the newspaper _coluzmns, and that appro- priations for that period have been increased in many cas These reports are supported by the figures showing the amount of ad- vertising placed in the last six months.” The magazine advertising has shown a slight gain and the space devoted to sales appeals in the newspapers was well ahov for the first half of 1923, Half Years Record. Newspapers in of the principal citics printed 693,443,746 lines of paid advertising from January 1 to Jane 30, as compared to 691,7. in the cor- responding period last year, a gain of 1713525 lines. All of this im- provement, however, was piled up arly in the year. January nd February showed gains of 1,93 and 132544 lines, respectively. Then the space used began to fall off, the heaviest recession oceurring in May, when the total was 4,091,568 1i lower than for the correspond- ing month last year. In June, however, betterment was apparent and this loss was reduced to *1 lines. Dry ivods Ads Larges Analysis of the kinds of ing in the New York pape last six months throws an ing light on the trends of business in various lines. National ad- vertising appearing in the New York papers totaled 23,811,568 lines, as compared with 21,742,650 lines in the corresponding period of 1923, the major part of the gain appearing in the Sunday and morning paper ficlds Auto Dixplays Heavy. howed a loss, 3 to 2,712 lines,” but amusements improved arly 200,000 lines. and automobile y gained nearly a million lines Included among the commodities which showed larger use of space were building materials, candy and gum. furniture, non-intoxicating beverages and druggists’ preparation: Musical instruments, proprietory medicines, magazines. books, shoe jewelry and tobacco were given less space than last year. Financial ad- vertising showed a heavy falling off and there were losses in space de- voted to steamships and travel, want ads, schools and colleges, church no- tices, deaths and dancing places. Specialty Shopx Cut Space. Newspapers themselves used more space than last year to tell the public how good they were, and the volume of advertising devoted to railroads, real estate annd resorts and legal no- tices showed some improvement. The amount paid for space by women's specialty shops declined sharply. falling from 2 Hotel advertising was about the same | as last year. Plans for a nation-wide campaign of advertising similar to those now being conducted by the raisin, prune and other fruit growers is now being worked out by the California Peach Growers' Association. The majority of the growers have already indorsed the plan and the association heads are seeking the co-operation of can- ners. The peach men, it is asserted, will follow the recent policy of the other growers' -organizations and place approximately 80 per cent of their yearly advertising with news papers Bean Growers Plan Drive, The Michigan Bean Growers' Asso- ciation plans the expenditure of con- siderable sums this season for in- tensive advertising to be financed jointly by growers and elevator op- erators. NEW YORK, Julv 25—Silver metal today sold at 68 cents, a new high price for the year. The rise in silver is lald by producers to the in- creasing use of silver currency in Europe and prospects that siiver coinage will expand further if the Dawes plan goes through. Use of silver has been expanding in con- tinental countries, particularly Rus- sia and Germany. However, Govern- ment statistics show that India and China_ bought $72,633438 out ot $90,137,087 of the white metal ex- ported from the United States in the first 11 months of the fiscal year ended June 11. FEWER FAILURES NOTED. FORT WORTH, July 25 (Special).— Bankruptcy proceedings in this sec- tion in the first half of the year showed a marked decrease, as com- pared with 1923.
