Although Admiral Sumner had made his home near Patchogue, L. I., for some time, he had® often expressed a wish to be buried in Washington and it was out of deference that his body was removed to Rock Creek cemetery after a vault had een made to_receive it. Born in Michigan in 1841, Admiral Sumner was graduated from Annapo- lis the year the civil war broke out. Ordered to immediate active duty, he was in several engagements and was commander of the U. S. S. Massasoit during its engagement with a Con- federate ironciad. He also partici- pated in the engagement before Vicksburg. 1In 1901 and 1902 he was commander of the south Atlantic fleet and was retired the following year. WILL CONFER 3D DEGREE. Strong, sixty-six years old, an employe in the accountancy department of the United States Treasury for the last twelve years, died suddenly in the corridor of the building while on his way home from work.
