DEMOCRATS MISSING CHANCE, SAYS WHITE Editor Holds Opportunity to Meet G. 0. P. Issue Submerged in Flood of Trivialities. CONVENTION TO BE COLORFUL Regardless of Outcome, Sensations Aplenty Are Promised. BY WILLIAM ALL NEW YORK, Sund: Republican national Clevelund frankly challenged the Democratic ngtional convention to meet the issue all the American nation be made safe for plutocracy?” Tonight, forty-cight hours before the convention assembles, it looks as though the national Democratic party would vield to the temptation to dodge the challenge. Side currents, minor issues, unimportant men and matters are sweeping into what should be the main stream of influ- ence in the Democratic convention, making it a dirty, frothy, rather im- potent tide. These trivial and seSondary causes and contentions have to do with the Ku Klux Klan and prohibi k convention of didate and write its pla Dbias from the big economic 3 blatantly laid down by the Republi- can national conyention, and this bias slant will indicate the tremendous influence of second-rate minds in the Democratic party and in the country at large. 5 If the comvention sits'long enough these minor issues—religious bigotry @nd prohibition—may sink to their unimportance, but today it &oems as though thess issnes might control the major destimies of the Democratic party. Kian Poisen. The forces of liberalism and con- @efvatism are not dramatically staged. Smith and McAdoo, who are the leading minority contenders for the Democratio nomination, s be liberals. But ‘the forces behind them are not divided along liberal or conservative lines to any marked dif- ference. Smith, who attracts lberals of the country, by New York and New England and by groups of delegates who are con- #picuously conservative to the point of reaction. In his delegations are ";‘lguk'm‘l:m ‘l:hll‘dh ‘wnuld fit weil in the Ps ‘ork an Y ank s Cleveland. SeidRpkAtonalat Tammany and the Boston Irish have mo desire to nominate a liberal, though because of his religion these |- @elegates arc eager to name Smith MecAdoo, similarly is supported by the south, in which are groups of states dominated by dyed-in-the-wool con- servatives, though McAdoo, unquestion: feels U mated by liberal impul ndoubt. 3 Smith supporters would be glad to name ('ngfrwood as the second choice, and Underwood v f « idge who as_reaction- of the na- mittee. McAdoo al to whom himself, t he is domi- ary as Chairman tional Republican has no second choice | e might throw his strength, . tried. Probably he dock hot contasi his delegates. Very likely when they leave him they will find their natural alignment " in the convention, yet surely McAdoo is the strongast single force developed by the preliminary contests in the states. South Anti-Smith. Because the south is shot throu with the Ku Klux Kian' poison. 1t i assumed that the s Smith, and b supporters are adherents of the holy faith it is highly probable that they would never get to McAdoo on any ballot in the convention. McAdoo is supposed to have had much strength amonz midwestern delegates who are strong for prohibition. Smith, of course, gets his strength in territory where prohibition is still a by-word and a scoffing, and Smith' would never go to McAdo and McAdoo control two- convention if they ever could com- bife. To nominate either, one-third of the convention must go en masse to Smith or McAdoo without e Smith or McAdoo losing his pr strength. This eventuality seems gro- tesquely absurd. and so. if one were to prophesy, he would say that neither Smith nor McAdoo had a chance, though each is a leading can- didate before the convention Mule Will Kick, Thus have the garbage boats of d politics dumped fanaticism and try into the water. fI chairman the Republican national committee could control the Demo- cratio convention in the interests of public wisdom would en- courage him to handle it as it is now going forward. A Democratic chal- lenge of the Republican position would bring the issue of plutocracy against Democracy square up to the American voter, and there is no doubt how he would act. ‘America is not yet ready to embrace the theory that only ‘as biz business ot Smith ds of the success, em to |2 Republican challenge will be ignored or evaded by a Democratic attempt to make faces at their opponents without brand- ing the Republican party as it has labeled itself in Cleveland. Only & miracle which will come out of a ten-day or two-week session, a long session in which the garbage will sink and the waters clarify, can produce any strong, clear current in this convention, which ehall_meet squarely the tide which the Republicans have tried to bring in. Bryan a Colorful Figure. Nevertheless, the Democratic conven- tion will be full of dramtic interest. For fifty vears the Democratic conven- tions in this country have furnished the heart interest in our politice. The mule is deeply symbolical of the Democratic party. His conventions are inexorably full of kicks. Two elements always assemble in any Democratic na- tional convention: Rococo gentlemen from the oid south, chivalrous, talks, in- clined to be passionate in their convic- tions, meet and mingle with the Irish from the great cities, expansive, clo- quent, fier; nd militant gentlemen, to whom Jife t is one vast plug- hat parade, s on the side. These two elements, the old south, and the city Irish, always make Dem- ocratic conventions ivid in aspect and thrilling in procedure. A Demo- cratic convention is always liable to a stampede, its emotions, lend it to explosion at any minute. ¥or nearly thirty years Bryan has been the great figure in every Democratic con- Vention, sometimes in victory, some- times in defeat, but always power- ful, always & to heights of lead- ership, that seem utterly impossible to the kindly, frowzy, amiable old gentleman, who wanders about Amer- ica for three years between conven- tions doing rather awkward and im- possible things. A Big Show. It is because of the fire in him that Bryan holds his power in Democratic conventions. In a Republican conven- tion Bryan would fall flat. Republi- can assembles are always controlled by the repressed. unctuous, comven- tion frock ed acolytes of the steam-roller, who keep their emotions in the ice chest, and say their beads on a cash register. The Cleveland convention, dull, placid and eminently respectable, was only all other Republican conven- tions with its monotony stressed. And this Democratic convention, whether it be long or short, liberal or conserv- ative, free or bossed, will have its crown of throns and cross of gold its platform injected over the West- ern Union amid hisses, its favorite son angled in a three-day deadlock, When Nature Won Furnish a Breeze—a, General Electric Fan WILL! LONDON, June 23.—A dispatch to the Exchange Telegraph from Ran- £00n, British India, says the American round-the-world flyers experienced difficulties in their journey between Bangkok and Burma, particularly When crossing the Siamese mountains, where they encountered air pockets and had to fly through dense clouds.
