<LEOPOLD AND LOEB \ G0 TO TRIAL AUG. 4 ‘State-Wins First Skirmish to Have Early Date Set for B Hearing. “SIAYERS PLEAD NOT GUILTY ——— Darrow Is Expected to Ask for Change of Venue. By the Amociated Press. CHICAGO, June 11.—State's Attor- ney Crowe today won his first skir- oish for an early trial of Nathan Leopold, jr, and Richard Loeb, con- femged Kidnapers and slayers of Rob- ert Franks, when the trial was set for Angust 4. « Both boys pleaded “not guilty” when arraigned before Chief Justice Caverly. Mr. Crowe demanded a speedy trial, asking July 15 as the date, but Attorneys Clarence Darrow and Benjamin Bachrach of the de- femsc, objected. Judge Caverly then fixed July 21 to pose of preliminary motions and ct the trial for August 4. Defense ounsel declared they did not believe would be possible to be prepared for trial at that time, but said they would do everything possible to be ready, making the reservation, how- ever, that if that were not possible they would then ask for more time. Prank B. Loomis, formerly of the diplomatic service, and at one time assistant secretary of state, now a resident of California, who has been traveling through foreign lands, ying principally colonization, was with the President for half an hour today, during which time he gave his views as o the methods of other countries in handling _their colonies. In his opinion, the United States has much to learn in the mat- ter of developing its colonies. He said, however, that this was due tc inexperience rather than from any other cause. In his estimation, Hol- urpasses all of the ot not exeepting Great Loomis said the princ| the United States in its atti- |tude toward its colonials is the tendency to hand out textbocks and plenty of money and to let it rest {there. Education he stated is es- sential, but sometimes too much of it works badly and produces agitators and reformers, who in time will work to the detriment of the mother goy- ernment and who have no difficulty in spreading a feeling of unrest and dis- content. Baron de Cartier de Marchienne, Belgium ambassador to the United States, who will sail shortly for home, called’ upon the President today to | pay his respects before leaving. THE EVENING STAR, WASHINGTON, ARGENTINA’S FINANCING COMMENDED AS MODEL Minister Molina Predicts Nation Will Close the Year 1924With i Balanced Buxdget. DY CLAUDE 0. PIKE. Dy Cable to The Star and Cbicago Daily News. Copyright, 1924. BUENOS AIRES, June,11—Dr. Mo- lina, minister of finamee, predicts that Argentina will close 1924 with a balanced budget. The first four months show expenditures within re- celpts, an unusual occurrence for South American republics. Tudget receipts of 1924, are esti- mated $36,000 in excess of est- mated expenditures, but . financial circles doubt that the admipistration is powertsl enough to fight off the onslaughts of immense army Day- rollers and others expecting & live- lihood from the government, to en- able it to complete the year Without a deficit. B Should the administration _close 1924 within its budget it wouldbring added prestige to President ear and his financial minister and would increase the nation's stapding in the money markets of New York and London. It would also permit the president to reduce the floating debt of the nation and put Argentina on its financial feet. Declines Invitation to Explain. NEW YORK, June 11—Magistratey Norman J. Marsh of trafic court, who twice suspended sentence on Miss Abby Rockefeller, daughter of John D. Reckefeller, jr., for speeding in an automobile, today declined the in- vitation of Commissioner of Accounts Hirshfield to appear at an Investiga- tion. The magistrate said he was too busy to leave court, but would be glad to discuss the matter with the commissioner in court. Hirshfield refused the counter in- vitation. 2,000 Berlin Beer Halls Close.
