Improvements in THE SUNDAY ST, WASHINGTON, D. C. APRIL OTORS ~' anfl Open Cars Being Overlooked by Public Trend Toward Closed Type Is Predomi- nant, But Many Purchase Other Models. e Owning of Both Is Desirable. BY WILLIAM ULLMAN. 1s the open car doomed to the limbo ef forgotten things like the hand erank and the acetylene headlight? This question is thought to be par- ticularly important at this time owing A number of changes which are putting open and closed cars in a de- | cidedly different relation to each other. Production reports have shown, and are continuing to show, a larger and larger percentage of closed Jjobs There is an undeniable trend toward ! the closed car—or possibly a landslide yet there are thousands of open cars sold every day to people who would have nothing clse i Compared to Theatricals. | There are those who compare the present high favor of the closed car to a condition that existed in thea- tricals ten years ago. At that time, the moving picture made such an im- | pression upon the public that the gitimate or spoken stage was in dan- Zor of being cast into oblivion. There was talk of $2 movies and the le mate houses were dark much too fre- auently. Then, by degrees. the pub- lic discovered that u movic was a movie and that a spoken play was a epoken play. There was a market for both. A good movie today can com- mand good prices. respect and patron age. And so can & good spoken play. | Rut despite this anology, it would | seem that too many motorists tak it | for granted that they are riding in. their last open car, and that thel closed job will soon be the accepted | thing in motoring, open cars being a €ort of second choice propesition for those who cannot afford the best. How illogical this attitude may be judged from the fact that with quan- ity production methods in body | building, the difference batween open | and closed cars is no longer sufficlent to keep any motorist from ving | what he wants, particularly with the aid of the hand¥ finance companies. Should Hear Both Sides. Too many motorists forget that the people with the best proposition are those who own and operate two cars, one closed and one open. If any one wants to learn the facts, these are in d | ency { sounds from under the hood is nul- ticular difference in the performance between a closed or open car. Vibration In Curbed. There was a time when every closed job, except the most costly, rattled or vibrated annoyingly. Motorists kept to the open car because it was quieter. Now any well constructed closed body offers no objection, and power plants have been made vibra- tionless to an extent that any tend- of the closed car to amplify lified There have been numerous improvements in closed cars, with the result that if a man objected to them in 1920, he has to laok for & new set of objections toduy. But it i important to note that there seems to be a generml disregard for the fact tbat while the closed car has been undergoing various improve- ments. the open car has not becn standing still At any gathering of motorists one will hear the open car discussed as though it were still just where it was ten years ago. whereas the open car is frequently discussed on a basis of what it may be a few years hence. One hears the closed car talked of as the coming car, the inference be- ing that any objections it now offers will be promptly overcome. But some of the staunch advocates of the open | car would like to remind the average motorist that there may be some radical improvements in open within the same period of time. Open Car Improved. The catalogue of one manufacturer shows that the open car has already been considerably improved and that the strongest objection, the curtains, has been large rcome. These curtains not on! & clear view of the roadside. but are designed to be put away flat behind the back of the Tear seat. Tt is not unreasonable to suppose that an enterprising manufacturer will shortle offer & type of curtain that will come up out of the doors and sides by means of cranks in the manner of window ratsers as used in closed cars. The popularity of the closed car has been directly in line with a swing of the automobile toward the extremas of utility. People have been demand- Ing practical use from their automo- biles and trying to pretend that a car should not be used for pleasure or recreation.
