COMMODITY ISSUES , DEVELOP STRENGTH | Buying Power Recovery Past Week Seen as Correcting Weakened Technical Position. Ry the Associated Press. N V. YORK, April f.—Virtually all financial and commodity markets pointed upward this week i The recovery in stock prices gen- | erally was characterized as a correc- tion of weakened technical position after the recent long decline. Buying power was limited and came largely from the short interests who were hurried into covering their commit- ments by the brighter prospects for early action on the tax reduction bill | and the possibility of a favorable re- action here and abroad to the Dawes reparations report, which is expected within the next few days. | Investment buying was noted, how- | ever, in the railroad shares, which assumed the leadership of the market for the first time in months. This was predicated on the unusually good Feb- ruary earnings statements and the expressed opinion of Interstate Com- merce Commissioner Esch before the congressional committee that a re- vision in freight rates would be dis- astrous to business and that rates should not be altered to meet price fluctuations Trade reports showed further ‘a- dications of a slackening of business in many lines, although March ingot production was believed to have reached the peak of last April. Do- Tuestic oil procuction continued to de- cline, while consumption was steadily increased, but the only important price altération was a further ad- vance in Gulf Coast crude prices, Industrial shares moved up smartly in the early part of the week, but Lecame sluggish later, when specu- lative interest was divertel to the railroad group. Temporary strength of the copper shares was based on #peculative expectatfon of an in- creased European demand. Shippings and oils also maintained a firin tone. Further recovery of French ond Bel- gian francs featured the foraign ex- change market. The French franc crossed 6 cents to a waw 1924 high on buying attributed to short inter- ests, who delayed covering their cam- mitments until they became due at the end of the month, SATG W SR S5 oS Ask Your Banker How much real value wtands back of the stock you are asked to buy?
