By the Associated Press. BATAVIA, N. Y., March 13.—An in- quest here yesterday falled to dis- sipate the mystery surrounding the slaying in the village of Linden Tues- day night of Mr. and Mra Thomas ‘Whalley and Mrs. Mabel Morse. The murders are believed to be the work of a maniac, who may be responsible for other similar crimes in the vil- lage., but authorities said no leads had been uncovered pointing to the identity of the slayver. The ‘inquest showed Mrs. Whalley had been shot through the neck, the bullet striking the spinal cord. Mr. Whalley died from gunshot wounds, and Mra Morse was beaten to death with an ads. All three bodiew were badly charred, the house having been set afire. A can contalning kerosene found at the Whalley home, but not the prop- erty of the Whalleys, was said by authorities to furnish a connecting link between Tuesday night's mur- ders and an attempt in September, 1923, to burn the home of Justice of the peace Maurice Nelan in Linden. A similar can was found at the Nelan home at that time. The authorities believed that Tuesday's crime and the murder of Miss Frances L. Kimball in 1922 were the work of the same person. Miss Kimball was beaten to death. 3 Steamer Is Floated. HAVANA, March 13.—The French freighter steamer Tours, which went aground Monday night near Nuevitas yesterday. the harbor of Neuvitas.
