RETAILERS SUPPORT IMMEDIATE TAX CUT National Council Calls at White House to Acquaint Coolidge of Action. OPPOSES “NUISANCE” LEVY Attends Hearing on Honest Mer- chandise Bill. Hearty support of President Cool- fdge's recommendation to Congress for immediate legislation to reduce income taxes for 1923 was assured the Executive today by a delegation of the Retallers' National Council which called at the White House. The council completed a two-day session at the Washington Hotel, and before adjourning adopted resolutions peti- tioning Congress to authorize the legislation requested by Coolidge “so that the people of the United States shall, without delay, have relief from the high tax rates of the existing revenue law. e resolution also cnlled on Con- IPRING FASIH President | gress to “reduce taxes all along the line to the full extent permitted by the surplus reported by the Secretary of the Treasury, so that all classes of taxpayers may 'enjoy equitable rellef, and that this be done without fur- 4 revision of the excise or xes, as provided in the House bill, “this bringing ndeded re- lief to consumers and business alike and removing harmful and un-Amer- fcan discrimination against legiti- mate lines of trade,” also was recom- mended, * “We further petition the Congress,” the resolution concluded, “to follow these revisions of the excise taxes by further reductions, and final, com- plete elimination of this form of tax- ation at the earliest possible future time."” In addition to the question of taxa- tion, the council reviewed the Lodge honest merchandise bill, and later at- tended a hearing on this measure be- fore the subcommittee of the Senate interstate comm committee. The council d d_attention “to a practice, becoming too common, of using the term ‘Army and Navy' and other governmental titles as applied «w_private busincss, and decided to ask Congress to pass a law prohibit- ing such use.” It also indorsed the effort being made by the National Retail Hardware Assoclation to have such changes made as are necessary in the text matter of arithmetics and other text books used in the public schools, to have them conforri more nearly with the best modern !.usiness practice. The council indorsed and urged its members to support the formation and the work of the better business bureaus of the Associated Advertis- ing Clubs of the World. Among the representatives at. the conference from this city were: I L. Goldheim, Harry Hahn, Mr. Burt, Frank Jellefr, Harold Young and Eugene C. Brock- meyer. CAPITAL NATIVE DIES Mrs. Alice R. Stevens Had Made Home With Daughter in Virginia. Mrs. Allce R. Stevens, fifty-three years old, widow of M. C. Ste- vens and a resident of this city dur- ing the early days of her life, died at the home of her daughter. Mrs. A. . Creed, Arlington, Va., early today.
