Margaret Matzenauer, contralto, and Clarence Whitehill, baritone, of the Metropolitan Opera Company gave a lengthy and varied program in joint recital at Poll’s Theater yes- terday afternoon. The heaviest part came first with both singers intro- duced in Wagnerian sclections. Mr. ‘Whitehill, who sang Escamillo in Bizet's “Carmen” with the Washing- ton Opera Company so delightfully Monday evening, showed his ability for the more exacting Wagnerian roles in his Hans Sach’'s monologue from “Dle Meistersinger” and “The Evening Star” from ‘Tannhauser.” Then Mme. Her sustained pianissimo notes were particularly fine, but the singer herself did not seem to enter into the spirit of her Wagner, or of the songs In her Although her voice was full of color and life, her man- ner of singing did not change until her final =olo group, which was re- celved with marked enthusiasm. and rellita” and “En Cuba,” both arranged by La Forge and particularly well suited not “only to Matzenauer's beautiful ‘voh:e. but also to her personality and ype. The audience was quick to appreciate this quality and heartily recalled him for encores. In the German lieder the baritone’s enunciation was as distinct and musi- cal as in his English. Strauss' “Traum durch dle Daemmerung” was particularly lovely. - Schumann's Gretchaninoft's and Rachmani- were all sung in English and with dramatic Even John McCormack does not sing the old TIrish songs more charmingly than Whitehill. “The Londonderry Alr,” “The Next Market Day.” and “A’ Ballynure Ballad” were all given light, gay treatment that empha- sized their charms, and Oley Speaks’ “On the Roaud to Mandalay,” was filled with rich tone. A fine touch of comedy and pathos was given in the -two ‘encores “Lyin' 'Ere in the Hospital,” and “Uncle Rome.” The high-light of the performance was the duet from Donizetti's ‘“La Favorita,” with a Mozart duet from “Don Giovanni” as the final encore. Both artists sang with finely blended tones and earnest artistry. - TREADWAY TO SPEAK. Representative on C. of C. Program Next Tuesday. Representative Allan T.
