v COUNCIL DISCUSSES Social Agencies Body Is Address- ed by Miss Clara Noyes of Red Cross. HOPKINS PHYSICIAN SPEAKS i Dr. Lewis Tells What G. W. U. Is Doing for Nursing. ' Nurse training was discussed by! Miss Clara Noyes of the Red Cross,! Dr, Canby Robinson of Johns Hop- KifiE University and Dr. Willlam Magher Lewis of George Washington | Unlversity before the Councll of So- cia] Agencies at the Ralelgh Hotel resterday afternoon. | The meed of a sort of “central| school” for nurses here, where funda- | mentals of nursing might be taught, was pointed out by Miss Noyes and; Dr. Lewls, the latter showing that a &o0d beginning had been made at his university, where nurses of six local hospitals meet in classes. Depend on Contributions, Miss Noyes declared that nurses’ training schools, both here and else- sald that within recent years o great hospitals had been erected en given to the school for nursing. She charged that when one hospital was erected here an old maternity ward, without proper washing facill- tles, was used for the nurses’ home. She spoke of the responsibility of oards of directors and trustees to the ng women who take up the train- » Robinson sald that social serv. fce has an essentfal role in a hos- pital, and told of numerous cases in Which a soclal service worker had heen able to do for the patient much that would have been impossible for the doctor to do by himself. Dr. Robinson said that there ought to be no such thing as the passage of “blank time” to a patient when Le enters a hospital, and that in this work of keeping the patient inter- ested the soclal worker in a hospital Pplays a major role. University Alds Nursing. Dr. Lewls, telling of the funda- mental lessons now being given local nurses from several institutions, sald that he bellieved the George Wash- ington University Medlcal School has « great future before it in this work, He sald that it can help ralse and maintain a high standard of nursing in the District, establish courses and help in various phases of research. In discussion which followed Supt. James Mays of Garfield Hospital charged a lack of civic pride and unity of action here in the matter of support of hospitals. Mrs. Ann Archbold was elected a ember-at-large. An_invitation was cxtended to the Child Welfare League ©f America to hold its next reglonal convention here. N CONVICTED AND FINED.
