"THE SUNDAY STAR, WASHINGTON, D. U, DECEMBER 16, 1923—PART - CHALMERS irst Proved and Now HYDRAULIC Chalmers has adopted Lockheed type hydraulic four-wheel brakes—the type now specified on all Detroit police flyers—only after its own long research and thousands of miles of proof-driving on its own ca-s, and in comparison with other principles. Chalmers took nothing for granted on the whole question of four-wheel brakes. In spite of the fact that these hydraulic brakes hiad already proven themselves in owner- use over periods up to four years, Chalmers engineers set out to get their own proof. But, through all the months spent in surveying the entire field both in Europe and America, there never was a chance to doubt the overwhelming superiority of the hydraulic principle. In consequence, Chalmers now presents hydraulic braking as the one and only system of four-wheel brakes that:— Equalizes perfectly and automati- cally, on all four wheels at all times. Applies the same braking pressure to all four wheels, and releases in- stantly when the pedal is released. Does not interfere with easy steer- ing in the slightest degree, even on sharp turns. Requires no lubrication whatever, all the year 'round. Requires less adjustment than the orz'zary rear-wheel brakes. There will be no chance for you—no matter what car you drive or what your previous impressions may have been—to question these superiorities for a moment. The demonstration you can give yourself in ten minutes’ time is too emphatic, too conclusive, too sensational, to leave a single shred of argument. Primarily, brakes are a factor of safetyona motor car. The degree of their safety depends almost entirely on the degree to which they equalize. In other words, the same braking pressure should be applied to both rear wheels, in the case of two brakes; or to all wheels, in the case of four brakes; in order to fiet the greatest braking effectiveness and the highest degree of safety. Chalmers hydraulic brakes always equalize perfectlyand automatically—withoutconstant adjustment, or the use of any doubtful or erraticequalizing device ormechanicalmeans. None but hydraulic brakes can so equalize, because only the hydraulic principle provides perfect and automatic equnle-don. Hydraulic System Simplest and Most Positive ‘There is nothing mysterious—or complicated —about the hydraulic principle. Itissosimple that a schoolboy can grasp it. It has been used for years in passenger eleva- tors. It is used in rams for raising water in the piping in country homes. It operates thousands of dump trucks every day. 1t is best expressed by Pascal’s law—which is really a scientific maxim—and which sum- it as follows: “ The pressure exerted upon any portion of a fluid enclosed in a vessel is transmitted, undi- minished, equally to all surfaces.” Applied to brakes, that means that precisely the same pressure exerted upon the operating Phone H 3 North cylinder of the Chalmers hydraulic system, is transmil in full force, to each of the four brakes, so that the braking action on each of the four wheels is precisely the same, regard- less of the adjustment of each brake. That is what we mean by perfect and auto- matic equalization. Hydraulic Equalization Means Brake-Safety And that, in turn, means brake-safety and certainty. It means a positiveness of braking control that is not to be had by any other means now in use on Motor cars. Theonlya. .stmentto be madeon Chalmers hydraulic brakes is at the brake bands them- selves, andispreciselythesameadjustmentthat is made on your ordinary two-wheel brakes. Any garage mechanic is competent to adjust the brake bands when that becomes neces- sary at the exceptionally long interval of 8,000 to 10,000 miles. No Oiling or Greasing; Nothing to Rattle There is no oiling or greasing to be done to Chalmers hydraulic’ brakes—not from one year’s-end to the other. There is no chance for rattles and loose play to develop, for there is an utter absence of rods and clevises and pins—nothing but four high pressure tubes in the channel of the chassis frame, and four short pieces of specially constructed reenforced rubber tubing to the brakes themselves. The big point for you to remember is that the Chalmers system of hydraulic brakes equalizes perfectly and automatically on all four whee Tha it gives you the very ultimate of braking safety and certainty. h That it requires no lubrication whatever. That it requires only the adjustment you would make to your ordinary rear-wheel brakes, but much less frequently than the simplest two-brake systems require it. That it is even simpler, in construction :'mgend?n. than your present rear- No Interference With Steering Come and drive the improved Chalmers Six with these brakes—which are the climax of the car’s superiority. We promise that you will have a feeling of safety and certainty you have never be’nn known in a motor car. ) You will stop in an incredibly short distance, smoothly and without a jar. You will find no more effort required to ap- ply ('Zlnlmen hydraulic four-wheel than is required to operate your two-wheel You will find no difference in steering, whether the brakes are on or off, on the straightaway or around a corner. Nothing but a ride in the car, and driving it yourself, can convey to you how wonderfully efficient these brakes are; how smoothly and positively they operate; how quickly and safely they bring tEe car to a stop, on a treacherous wet surface as well as a dry one. Nothing else will show you how delightfully easy the car steers, with the brakes on or off, on a straight course or turning corners. Telephone Now for An Appointment for Your Demonstration
