C., According to Experts. The Freer Gallery of Art recently purchased an early Chinese bronze vessel, dating from the Chou period, 1122-255 B. C.. the finest of its kind known. It 1s a libation cup of tripod form, with gwo upright grip-handles, and wag ubed. for pouring wine in ritual- tstic ceremony. It is covered with a smooth, dark green patina, a film which forms on bronze through long exposure, and except for the Up of one leg which has been broken, it is in excellent, preservation. The decoration ‘is of a closely pat- terned design, Incised, with project- ing bosses here and there, and strong- ly projecting cock’s-comb ridges. This design includes the t'ao t'ieh or ogre head, highiy abstracted. The cup has been placed on exhibi- tion in the east corridor of the Freer Gallery.
