Offerings were not un- usually large, but.a number of bids had either been lowered or Withdrawn overnight, and buyers showed little disposition to pick up stocks, except at material concessions in price on the part of sellers - . Such recently strong shares as Bald- win, Maxwell Motors A wnd Davison Chemical led the downward move- ment, with ‘Tecesstons of nearly 3 points cach. Losses of 2 points or more also were recorded by Marine preferred, Mack Truck, General Elec- tric, Lima Locomotive, Stewart War- ner, Northern Pacific and Schulte, and several of the low-priced olls moved up at_the close. Efforts to Bid Up Special Groups Are Abamdoned. By STUART P. WEST. 1 Dispateh to The Star. November European crisls got into the situation more acutely this morning than ever before. Liforts to resist the general selllng movement by bid- ding up special stocks twere aban- ! doned. The decline spread into alll groups and, with ome or two ex-| ceptions, all suffered about alike. 1 Oll shares for the most part held firm, with Cosden und, California Pe- troleum practically unchanged. and AMarland definitely strong around :2. The short intercst being larger in the oils than elsewhere. it looked as though advantage was being taken of the downward swing in other lines. to cover in this group. Steel Common Drop: .Steel common came down over & point, and Bethlehem Steel was off two points from Friday's high. Other steel shares were similarly affected, but their decline was not out of pro- portion to that in other parts of the st. Anaconda was quite as weak, spite all the encouragement afford- ed by the recent developments in the copper trade. It appeared us if the Locomotive stocks, especially Bald- win and American Locomotive, were getting Dbetter support than mu other things, but they were not he up to the extent they were yesterday. There was some response in the market to the statement by the presi- dent of JMjddle States Ol that the company had conserved its assets and added a great deal to thelr valui. The atreet, however, had in mind similar optimistic statements of other companies, which were not borne out by the action of the stocks concern- ed, and although short covering oc- curred in Middle States today, the views of the president did not cause certain traders to change their opinion. MATCH CONSUMPTION 41-2 TRILLIONS PER YEAR Special Dispatch to The Btar. NEW YORK, November 17.—4,675.- 650,000,000. - No, gentle reader, this long - line of figures does not, as might be supposed, represent the pa- .per money of the European countries in which currency inflation is the or- der of the day. On the contrary, they are the plain, uninflated statis- tics of the world consumption of that article of daily and hourly use—the atch. mA recent flotation in the United States of a large loan for the pur- pose of enlarging the actlvities of the world match manufacturing in- dustry has led the Trade Record of the National City Bank of New York to a study of the world's outturn and consumption of matches, and it esti- mates that the people of the world used last yvear 4,675,650,000,000 ‘matches, for which they pald &pprox- imately $200,000,000. DUN'S TRADE REVIEW. ‘Business Without Essential Change as Winter Nears, NEW YORK, November 17.—Dun's Revlew today said: “Except for a natural growth of re- tell demand with the approach of win- ter, business is without essential chang! The same irregularities and contrasts that have marked the situa- tion in recent months are still present in different quarters. Proposals for a ro%llcllon of federal taxes, however, have'occasioned wide favorable com- ment and a further gain in export trade has given encouragement to some interests. Yet the sharp rise in stock prices of a fortnight ago, which apparently helped sentiment, has been followed by an uncertain trend and the depression in foreign exchange has continued. One of the most sig- nificant of current movements is the price yielding, which appears in hides and leather, pig iron. some kinds of building materials apd va- rious other commodities, and which is again refigcted in the excess of de- clines in Dun's list of wholesale quotations.” —_— LIVERPOOL COTTON. E NEW YORK, November 17.—Interest in today’'s bond market was concen- trated on the foreign llst, particular- ly the French and Belglan issues. Except for French 8s, which were up & point from the last sale of yes- terday, French bonds opened either unchanged or lower. The French 7%s were down more than a Ppoint, while the City of Marseflles 6s and the City of Bordeaux 6s were off from a half to a full point. Department of the Seine 7s opened unchanged and the Parls Lyons and Mediterrangan 6a were higher. > There was no particular logic about these dlscrepancies. All depend for thelr investment rating upon the credit of France. There is, however, a market distinction in that French 8s and French 7%s have the support of & strong sinking fund which is not the case with the French city issues. Whether or mnot, the sinking fund was operating today could not be learned. - Other Bonds Little Changed. Outside the French group foreign bonds for the most part were lfttle changed. The United Kingdom 1 sues, while not particulirly active, were only fractionally lower. Among the South American bonds Bolivia 8s sold below the low of yesterday, which was a decline of 2 points on the week. The market for domestic issues was irregular. United States govern- ment loans were little changed and some of the savings banks and rails were up and others were down. Buy- ing in this group has been selective all the week. There was uniform strength among such bonds as United States Steel sinking fund 5s, Indiana Steel 58 and Illinois Steel 43s. Speculative rails were generally a little lower, although the Missouri Pacific issues held fairly well. There was no such development in the St. Paul llst notwithstanding favorable forecasts. Erle Group Reacts. A slight reaction came into the Erie group, although on the week Erie tonds have made substantial ad- vances. There has been a good deal of talk about wome other interest buying Erie securities for the pur- pose of control. but this hardly ex- plains the action of the bonds. A more rational explanation is that the maérket is showing a tardy apprecia :{:n of Erie’s improved financial pos: n. Industrial bonds moved, as they have all the week, in sympathy with thelr respective stocks. There was further heaviness today in Central Leather bs. Amerlcan Cotton Oil 5s added to their gains of the week, which, in- cluding today's advance, amount to about nine points. New issues continued to be readily absorbed. The most notable example of this this week was the rapid sale of the Southern Pacific 5 per cent equipment certificates offered on & 0.35 per cent basis. Reports as to the progress in distributing the American Telephone and Telegraph 53 per cent debentures are encouraging. The otal new offerings for the wi v $109,367,000. » SPREEk WA | NEW YORK DAIRY PRICES. :F.\'EW YORK irm: recelpts, 6,143 tubs | higher than extras, 5434a35: creamery, extras (92 score), 54; do., firsts (38 to s‘l‘?‘:fl;i)—:s“‘%“u 14, Sggs—Steady: receipts, 10,484 cases. With prices on pine fluctuating and largely not up to expectations, more, and more l0gging concerns are going into the swamps after hard- Wwood. ‘Although the hardwood located in wet places and is some- times very difficult to get out, lum- bermeén’ in this section have ' found that the premium paid for good hard- wood on the present market more than pays for the trouble and ex- pense. "Lumbermen are hoping that the supply will tide them over until the market on pine rises to a profitable level. o GERMANY'S BEEP CROP.
