NEW YORK, September 25.— De- spite the fact that New York news- paper publishers refused to take back their ‘striking pressmen unless full terms of an agreement signed Wwith the International Printing Pressmen and Assistants’ Union were met, the Combined Morning | Newspapers, is- sued since the strikie began, a week ago, were doubled in! size today. Each paper had sixteen pages, and for the first time since the \walkout display advertising appeared| to an appreci- mble extent. ‘Editorials, however, still were absent. | The offer of the pregsmen to return to work was conditional. Foremen visited the publishers, it was stated, and sald they would hring their crews back under the prowisions of the agreement with the| International, provided they wouldi not be com pelled to recognize George L. Berr. president of the orgamization. Th also said they would; not recognize David Simcns, head iof local, Web Pressmen’s Union, ) which had its charter revoked hy Mr. Berry. The publishers, howgver, refused, telling the men they must recognize the international unfon and obtain cards from it. \ Recruiting of pressmen to take the place of the strikers wals said to have met with “hearty response” by Mr. Berry. A group of ppessmen from Minneapolis and from Canada already have arrived, Mr. Berry|said. At the same time, Mr. Simoms declared, twenty-two of the thiriy-six press- men’s locals in the coumtry had of- fered him by telegraph! their moral support and promised that they would not send men to “break” the strike.
