NEW YORK, June 22.—Wall street, in trying to guage today the imme- diate future of the stock market, was influenced more by inside than by outside conditions, It was admiitted that the danger of more fallures had probably passed. Tt was also granted that the decline had gone further than anything in the outside business sitnation war- ranted. But the professionals were talking about the absence of the in- vesting public and they were also laying stress upon the probable re- sale of stocks bought by banking in- terests during the panicky hours of IWednesday afternoon and at the start Thursday morning. On these grounds they were not expecting the recov- ery to continue very far at the mo- ment, no matter what the market might do later in the summer by way of anti ing the course of the au- tumn trad Selling After Early ins. Acting on their theory, the trading element was inclined to sell after a further recovery this morning which lasted through the first hour in the carly afternoon, the market had a moderate downward turn which car- ried prices back to where the had left off last night without, however, involving any fresh weakness. BY GEORGE T. HUGHES. Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, June 22.—The bond market was firm and higher today at least’ as far domestic securities were concerned. More important still, therd were ovidences of Investment buying, not in large volume, perhaps, but still very encouraging. For a long time now seasoned bonds have been moving back and forth from one dealer to another. New offerings have been reasonably well placed, but real Investors could not be interested in old-line securities. One influence which seems to have brought about a change of attitude is the recent decline in the stock mar- ket. There is now a turning toward the greater security of lower return of seasoned bonds. The improvement extended through- out the lists. United States govern- mnt bonds were firm around last night's closing. Such high-grade issues as Central Pacific first 4s, Pennsylvania general fund 68 were well bought. There was very heavy trading in New York Cen- tral 6s. Because of the conversion privilege the bonds will keep pace with the stock and, meanwhile, con- sidered simply as an investment, it is selling on a 5% per cent basis. Thus it combines speculative and in- vestment attraction: Erfe bonds all sold higher, with the greatest advance in the general 4s. Here again the speculator who faith in Erle finds the bonds just convenient for his purpose as the ock with the additional advantaze of greater safety and a vield which more than pays carrying charges. New Haven 6s also rallied, which was not surprising in view: of the fact that yesterday's low was within a fraction of the record for the vear. Forelgn bonds were more frregular. The strong issues were Mexican 4s and 6s.- Both had a substantial ad- vance. The new Austrian loan went fractionally higher. The French cities issues dld a little better. Bolivia 8s were heavy around yesterday's low. Market Flashes at Today’s Close Wage Increases of 2 cents an hour, which will mean $344,000 annually, have been granted to 7,500 mechanics, helpers and apprentices and power plant employes of the malntenance and equipment department of the Rock Island road. People who are bullish on White Motors base their confidence on_the | financial plans of the company. They anticipate that White will have wiped out its loans before the end of 1923, and in addition, will increase the dividend above the present $4. Earn- ings are reported to be running at the rate of $12 a year. Ford Motor Company for week end- ed June 19 turned out 40,375 cars and trucks, twenty-nine more than the high record of the preceding week. Daily production passed the 6,800 mark June 13, when assembly plants of the company turned out a total of 6,817 cars and trucks, beating by thirty-six the record of 6,781 set up the day before. New York Air Brake Company has declared a dividend of $1 a share on its common stock, payable August 1 to stock of record July 9. This is the first dividend declared on Air Brake common since the reclassification of its caplital stock last September, when 100,000 shares of $100 par were ex- changed for 200,000 shares of no par and a new issue of 100,000 shares of preference stock created. increase from the present annua] rate of $6 a share on the common stock ot Atchison Topeka and Santa Fe at June 26 meeting of board, were denied today by President W. B. Storey. Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company has made a reduction to meet competi- tive prices retroactive to June 11. Rumors of an Cars loaded on Pennsylvania system in week ended June 16, totaled 179,164 against 177,084 previous week, and 140913 in corresponding week, 1922.
