June 2 —Two- thirds of this town was wiped out today by fire, which cauged the death of one man, probable fatal injuries to another and rendered 200 persons homeless. Forty-two buildings were burned to the ground and it was be- lleved the loss would be more than | $500,000. Only a few buildings in the entire community remained intact tonight when the flames had been brought under control, 'or had burned them- selves out, despite the fact that fire apparatus’from all the nearby citles and towns was called to aid. & Burned Fie! The dead man was S. B. Gilman, a large property owner, who was found | in a fleld after the flames had sub- | sided. He had been burned to death It was believed that while hurrying Jrom one burning building to anoth- er that his clothing had taken fire and that he had perished before he could reach aid. D H. A. Gilman, a brother of the first victim of the fire, was burned so se- verely that it was thought he could not recover when his clothing took fire while watching the flames. He also owned much property in the little town. » . Started in Loft. The flames started in the loft of a small stable in the rear of the resi- dence of Mrs. A. A. Stevens, and fire- men sald tonight that they belleved children playing with matches or smoking were responsible for the laying waste of the town. The flames spared little in their path, burning down the post office building, the town hall and two churches, af well as numerous dwellings. The plant of the town weekly newspaper, the Canaan Re- porter and Mascoma Register, was destroyed, as was the Hotel Barnard and a number of business blocks.
