Having taken but one game from the Reds, which they did yesterday, The victory lifted the Braves to a tie with the Reds for second division leadership, and to within one point of fourth place. The battered Chicago Cubs battered the helpless Phillies, 7 to 4. PITCHING DUELS SCARCE ~ IN CAMPAIGN THUS FAR Explanation for Low Number of Overtime Battles Is Found in Fact That Winning Club Usually Stages One or Two Big Innings. BY JOHN B. FOSTER. EW YORK, May 18.—There has been a noteworthy scarcity ot extra- inning games played to date in both major leagues. There are two reasons, which are so closely related that they might be merged into one. The first is that the records up to today show that in roma games played. whatever team has won has had the smash-and-bang punth sufficiently concentrated to put over the winning margin in one or two innings of the regulation nine frames. The second reason is that so-called pitchers’ duels so far this season have been few and far between. The first day of the National League season began as if there w to be all kinds of excitement caused by extra-inning affrays, but o one outburst of extra-time frenzy took place for a long time after thar start. On onessolitary day later some of the teams broke loose again in an extra-inning carnival—and that’s all.
