Wishart, president of ‘Wooster College, Wooster, Ohio, late vesterday was elected moderator of the General Assembly of the Presby- terian Ckurch in the United States of merica, defeating William Jennings an on the third ballot. Dr. | art was presented with the gavel | ’Southern v Church Chooses Dr. Sprunt of Charleston, S. C. Time of Delegates Taken Up With Overtures. By the Associated Press. % MONTREAL, N. C. May 18.—Dr. Alexander Sprunt of Charleston. S. C. was elected moderator of the South- ern Presbyterian General Assembly vesterday afternoon. One hundred and three overtures from presbyteries and synods, rang- ing from the question of whether women will be allowed places on ex- ecutive committees to the problem of whether the body will remain in the .n America, and matters involving forelgn mission work, today were be- fore the sixty-third general assembly of the Southern Presbyterian Church. Taking the positlon that the exec- utive committee on foreign missions has no right to use funds contributed it for contribution to the support of the National Christian Council, the Bethel Presbytery, South Carolina, re- quested the assembly to 8o instruct the committeemen. The presbytery also requested that the committee be instructed not to encourage the work of the councll “in any way whatever.” Abingdon Preabytery Overture. “The Presbytery of Abingdon (Vir- ginia) respectfully overtures the Gen- eral Assembly that it instruct its ex- ecutive committee on foreign mis- sions to take the church into its com- plete confidence as to its financial standing and to publish in our church paper the actual amount allowed by isald committee, rather than the bud- get shortage,” reads another docu- ment. Another overture, from the Fay- etteville, N. C., Presbytery, asked the assembly to appoint a special com- mittee to “promptly and thoroughly investigate the charges of unsound- i ness in doctrine in circulation against certain missionarids now in the for- PFederal Council of Churches of Christ [T eign flelds, and in connection With the courses taught in certain educa- tional institutions in the foreign fleld, to report to the 1924 meeting." The executive committee on forelgn lons yesterday reported that an investigation had been made of charges relating to the foreign mis- sionaries and all allegations had been shown to be without foundation. Asserting there is “an imperative need of an adequate church bullding fund for our home mission churches,” the Presbytery of Brazos, Tex., re- quested the assembly to order the stewardship committee to begin im- mediately a campalgn for a fund of 8‘1.000,000 to be used for this purpose. Elght’ overtures relate to the status of the assembly with the federal coun- cil. “If we do not support the council financially, we have no {nfluence,” it was asserted. Dr. Robert E. Spear, New York, president of the federal council, addressed the assembly to- day, telling of the work of his organ- ization. The overture referring to the ques- tion of women on executive commit- tees, which commissioners have stat- ed, will result in much debate and probably will be oné of the most in- teresting matters considered at this assembly, follows: “At the request of the executive committee of St. John's Presbytery, the Presbytery of St. Johns, Florida. hereby overtures the General Assem- bly that at least one woman be placed on each of the executive committees of the General Assembly.” Among other overtures, there is one filed by the Winchester Presbytery, PLANE MAKERS GUILTY OF PATENTS’ MISUSE Court Orders French Firms Pay 7,500,000 Francs to Inventor for Stabilizing Control. By the Associated Press. PARIS, May 18.—Breguet, Caudron and Farman, three of France's lead- ing airplane manufacturers, co-de fendants with the state In suits brought by Robert Esnault-Pelterie for infringement of patents, were ordered by the French civil courts to pay the plaintiff damages aggregat- ing 7,600,000 francs. The suits grew out of the use in the defendants’' airplanes of Esnault- Pelterie’s invention for steering and stabilizing, known in the vernacular of the airdromes as the “broomstick” or “joystick.” The actions have been before the courts since 1907. The government was brought in the Virginia. requesting that the assem- bly rescind action granting the Moun- tain Retreat Association (Montreal) $200.000 out of the general equipment fund. case becauso of its alleged fallure to protect the inventor's patents, regis- tered with the ministry of commerce, and because the ministry of war pur- chased from the defendant builders during the war a great number of machines equipped with the Inven- tion. The court ruled that the gov- ernment abetted the infringements by insisting upon the use of the “broomstick” and even supplying it to those manufacturers working for the government. Breguet and the government were jointly assegied 3,000,000 francs, au- dron and the government jointly 2,500,000 francs and Farman and the government jointly 250,000 francs. In addition, ‘the government alone was directed to pay damages of 1,- 750,000 francs. GOLD SPIKE READY. President to Drive It Into Alaska Railroad This Summer.
