The present cenditfon of the Van Buren School,"Anacostia, was severe-. 1y criticized by a special committee of the Anacostia Citizens' Asspciation Board of Trade, which reported, after an investigation of the school, to the directors at a meeting last night at 2100 Nichols ‘avenue southeast. The committee found that windows leading fo fire escapes, “even as higl as the third story,” were fastened down with screws, that could be re- moved only with a screwdriver; that there was a prevalence of gas in the school rooms and that defective pipes from the hot-air furnace permitted leakage into the rooms. ail of which, the committee declared, makes the building untenable. The janitor was charged with fail- ure to carry out the duties of his of- | fice by permitting such unsafe and in- sanitary conditions. The committee . also stated that he used abusive lan- ; guage to teachers and children. F. L. Earnshaw, F. Tracy Campbell and Dr, George €.
