The Scarlet Tanager A Stery of Secret Service and Diplomatic Intrigue BY J. AUBREY TYSON (Copyright, 1923, by the Macmilien Company.) (Continued from Yesterday's Star.) “But, before wo open this envelope, let us drink—some of this excellent Scotch which I took from a British tramp 1 sank last week. A little stimulant cannot fail to benefit Miss Warburton, and 1 am sure none of us will be' the worse for it. It Is fortunate, too, that we have six «lasses here-—one for each of us. My Iriends and 1 sampled some of the ilquor just before you entered, cap- tain. It Impressed us as being rather fine. We're a little shy on water, but —well, there seems to be enough to 50 around. He_arranged the six glasses in a line,”then withdrew the corks from hoth bottles on the tabie. With & bot- 1 each hand he used them alter- pouring liquor into _the <lasses. When this was done he filled vach glass with water from a pitche Rennison watched this proceeding, then glanced toward Miss Warburton, who was gazing at him fixedly. He smiled faintly as he read the warn- ing in her eyes. With a slight bow, Seafalcon handed one of the glasses to Mirfam and moved another across the tabl to- ward Rennison. He next selected one or himself; then, with a wave of one of his hands, invited his three com- panions to help themselves. Ralsing Lis glass, he addressed Rennison. “Captain, this night has ylelded rather more than its share of dis- trust and fears.” he said. “Let us drink to the hope that all may be ghded by the duwn of the coming ay.” Rennison ruised the glass to his lips, then lowered it without touching the tiquor. Mirlam, still watching him, did ikewise 'Stop!" comman :ng around to stood at his left. “All drink or non What is your cbjection, Rennison, to the toast I have proposed?” “To the toast there can be no ob- jection, of course,” Rennison replied s he returned the glass to the table. “You suspect, then, the liquor is po 'ned?” the brotherhood chicf que: tioned sternly. Oh, no," the army man answered smilingly. “Should you design to poi- 3on me, vou would walt, at least, un- 11 the ‘papers I have undertaken to deliver are in your hands.” For the first time since Rennison had entered (he room the eyes of Sea- falcon flashed wrathfully. The chief's Joft hand still held his glass as he stepped behind the chair on which Miriam was seated. With his right he quickly drew an sutomatic pistol from one of his pockets and aimed it at the back of the head of the actress, There was no mistaking the menuce in the gaze he bent on Rennison. “You will drink?" he asked Realizing that even o moment's hes- ftation might result in an immediate discharge of the threatening weapon, Rennison nodded and reached for the sor he hud thrust aside. Now drain your glasses—alll falcon commanded. The order was obeyed. One by one each male drinker placed his empty zlass upon the table. That from which Mirlam drank was taken from ter and put_down by Seafalcon; who returned to his pocket the plstol vwith which he had threatened her. “And so we come aguain to the pay- ment of the price—the two hundred thousand dollars, which 1 told you was in this envelope,” Seafalcon be- an. “You have required that this sum 2 As Seafalcon stopped, there flashed Into the mind of Rennison the knowl- ~dge that something strange had hap- pened or was about to happen. Now. for the first tl the brotherhood chfef, himself, appeared to he {ll at ease.” He spoke hesitatingly, in the manner of one whose thoughts were not upon his words. and his volce was more harsh and metallic than it had Leen before. Though he fumbled with ‘he envelons of which he had spoken, he made no move to open it. His ace grew whiter as his gaze rested on the table. The interrupted sen- 1énce remained incompleted. His at- titude finally Lecame that of one who istened and waited. Mirfam, breathing heavily, looked rt Rennison anxlously. Once their glances met, and she fancied she read in his eyes that suspicion which, she d1d not doubt, he saw In hers—the suspicion, amounting almost to a con- viction, that the liquor they had been compelled to drink had been polsoned. As Rennison turned from her, a faint tinge of color came to her face and a momentary sense of exultation dlslodged her fears and fanned into sudden flame the darkening embers of her woman's pride. Despite the coldness of his manner, thers was no :nistaking the keen anxiety which jurked in the brief glance he had turned upon her, and it was with al- most hysterical satisfaction that the nctress reflected that it was only to rave her from instant death that (yeorge Rennison drank what he be- 1leved to_be poisoned liquor. Again Seafalcon raised his eyes and met the gaze of Rennison. Again he rpoke—with manifest effort, harshly and metallically. “The sum you have required of us, captain, s @ large one. and vet—ye it cannot be denled that—that— An exclamation—hoarse and inco- herent—interrupted him; then, with bowed head and hunched shoulders, one of the two brotherhood men who had been standing with Kerfoot turched forward and fell to the floor. A little cry issued from the lips of \firlam as she rose from her chair. A Jook of dread was on the face Ren- son turned toward her. With out- stretched hands she ran to him, and, ns his left arm passed round her waist, she hid her face on his shoulder. A gecond body fell heavily to the floor, but Seafalcon, standing beside the table and still fumbling the en- »d Scatalcon, whirl- adherents, who nor this woman here would have left | this place allve. But Miss Warbur ton aiweln to be suffering from ex- | haustion. There is no reason why! she should be standing. Let her sit down.” Stooping, the brotherhood chief | ll’l!cked up and placed for the young woman the chair which had been overturned by the falling Kerfoot. Miriam sank on it weakly. “There is nothing that may be done | —for them?” Rennison asked, glanc- ' ing at the three still, outstretched figures on the floor. “Nothing,” Seafalcon “Already life s extinct poison that wae in their liquor no antidote {s known. It was some of this that was in the end of that cigar into which your friend Storrow bit while he was waiting for you to join him in his limousine, outside the de- partment building—a cigar he was 80 ill-advised as to acecpt from & mere »lcqu intance at the Guilford recep- tion. Gripping one of Rennison’s hands lwhlch rested on the back of the chair, Miriam looked up at him fesrfuily. “Is—is—Hayden——7"_ she fultered. zvoldln‘ her glance, Rennison nod- ed. With a little gasp, Mirlam turned {from him, and, “trembling, hid her face in her hands. “But there is no time now to think or speak of them,” Seafalcon, frown- ing, sald impatiently. “As 1 have eaid, you win. Five minutes before vou entered that door I had indis- putable evidence of the fact that I was 60 completely trapped that es- cape was impossible. But, before your friends. He stopped abruptly. Following the direction of his gaze, Rennlson saw a slight shaking of the ladder that rose through the open trap. Speaking crisply, Seafalcon went on: “Your friends are here. The guard I had on the float below had orders to leave uas woon as Miss Warburton came up. The way Is open to me, as you see. But, for ten minutes, per- haps, you and I must talk without interruption from others. What I have to say is rather more in your interest, now, than my own. Keep your men out of here. 1 will not be taken alive, of course. He had not finished speaking when the head and shoulders of u man wearing the uniform and insignia of a commander in the Navy emerged through the trap. Moving delib- erately, he completed the ascent of the ladder and stepped to the floor. If he carrfed a weapon it was not in view. Behind him the head and shoulders of another naval officer up- peared on the ladder. The gaze of the newcomer moved from Rennison to Seafalcon, thence to Miriam Warburton, then back to the army ofticer. His glance interro- gated, Dbut he neither spoke nor saluted. Rennison was ubout to &pealk when the opening of the door at the end of the room caused him to turm quickly. The man who entered was Towndrow. Seated on the table and fingering the pistol with which, 2 few minutes before, he had threatened the actress, Seafalcon looked over one of his shoulders at first one intruder and then the other. His glance was coldly curlous. The smile that came to Rennsion's lips was forced. *Did 1 not know, gentiemen, that vour arrival simuiltaneously must be regarded as accldental, I would con- gratulate you on the accuracy with which you have harmonized your plans,” he said. “For the time being, however, there i5 nothing that will require your presence in here. The chief and I are having a little talk, and would prefer not to be disturbed. He will make no attempt to escape nor to do me injury. Meantime, Towndrow, I will a8k you to take a. position outside the door and see that no one enters it. And, Catherwood, if you and your men will walt below —somewhere near the foot of the lad- der until "t The naval officer saluted, turned, and once more set foot on the lad der. As he descended he glanced from one to another of the lifeless figures on the floor. But Towndrow hesiiated. With a hand still grasp- ing the knob of the door, he, too, looked at the prostrate forms, and, for several moments, the brooding eyes of Seafalcon, still fingering the vistol, held his gaze. Then he turned to Rennison, and Mirfam, despite her agitation, wondered why that strange expression of awe stole over the face of the secret service man— why Rennison's features grew sud- denly paler and sterner, ag, frown- ing, he turned aside, Even had she heard she would not have understood the significance of the words mut- tered by Towndrow, as, with bowed head, he passed out of the room and closed the door behind him. ‘The Rennison way again!” he faltered. “The devil's in it and him. It's always—always the Rennison way.” ‘When the intruders were gone Sea- falcon, leaving the table, dropped the pistol 'into one of the outer pockets of hls coat. I'm not going to keep you long, Rennison,” he began abruptly, “but before I come to what you probably will designate hereafter «s my con- fession, I am going to ask a few words of explanation from you. You and your federal friends mixed in a lot of new stuff in that game you played on me today. Some of it is clear enough to me now, but eome has me guessing. How did you f lows spot my submarine in the har- bor? It entered at night, and, lying on the bottom all day, its machinery was still. No alrplane flew over it, and no vessel was seen in {ts vicinity, answered. | For the i | i 1 velope, continued to gaze ut Rennl- “Chiet—chie: 3 The hollow volce now speaking was that of Kerfoot, who, leaning heavily on the back of 'the chalr Mirlam had left only a few inoments before, was regarding Sea- falcon with an expression in which agony, wonder and reproach were blended. N “Chlef, you've — you've — Wrong #lasses—you've done for us!” he fal- od. Lo he chair clattered beside him as his big frame. falling, shook the floor. Supported by Rennison’s arm, Mi- riam Warburton raised her head. She sew Rennison and Seafalcon were looking at one another steadily. Both were pale. but calm. The Army officer was the first to speak. “And so you made a mistake i jaentifying the polsoned bottle, eh? he_asked. Seafalcon shook his head. “No, Rennison” he sald. “Thore has been no mistake—in the filling of the glasses. The game you a I have been playing since the death of Channing yesterday is finished. You win. I lose. But, before we clear away the pleces, there still 18 a little more for us to do—and say. CHAPTER XXXVIIL A Startling Task. Again Seafalcon picked up one of the bottles and poured some of its contents Into a glass. His features wore an expression of gloomy ab- straction as he ralsed the glass to his lips and drained it of the liquor. “You've double-crossed me, of eourse, Rennison,” he sald, “but the mature of your object, the desperate chances you have been taking and your action in walking in here to- night to what you belleved to be eertain death makes your course en- tirely justifiable. An even better view of it may be taken when I con- fess that had you d.ll“r:fl to me the con- aelther you and yet, less than a quarter of an hour ‘before your arrival here, it was destroyed—by_either a mine or tor- pedo. ~Naturally, I'm a little curious. How did you manage it7" “With that part of the affair I had nothing to do,” Rennison _replied “Until now I did not know the effort to discover and destroy your boat had been successful. The credit for that accomplishment belongs to the ullgml service and the dead Chan- ning. “Ah!” exclaimed Seafalcon, half- comprehendingly. “As you know, the aquaphone was his invention. The secret of this de- vice—which enabled vessels to ex- change telephone messages under the water—was stolen by you. But there was an auxillary device that eluded you. This was known s the locater. By means of this, communication be- tween your vessel and the receiving and transmitting drum, which you sank under this pler, was identified and the source traced with accuracy. The sclentific principles embodied in this combination were further de- veloped and utilized by Channing in the device which he employed for the detection of the position of sub- merged submarines and the visuali- fon of their movements.” B 'cn:g:l:nga was & t:‘}'u.lv“ fellow,” eatal , thoughtfully. It bad that he is lost to us.” e d-'x;o '}m” Rennison exclaimed, won- eringly. “To our federal government—yes,” ?eu’:lc?n answered, as he lighted a cigar. T'm afraid I do not meaning, chlef,” said Rennlson, “All shall be made clear to you presently, but—well, my curlosity is still unsatisfied. I am ‘going to ask you to indulge it a little further. At the time you arrived at the raliway station {n Baltimore tonight you did not know that my boat and my quar- ters on this pler had been definitely located 7" - “No?" “Or that a Penn quite get your then being w to it dack 5 fon a fow hundred yards Rere, had i packed with marines?* ST THE [ITTLE GORIES rBEDn%:-: Black Pussy Makes a Dis- covery. A cat that's wise will know her place And thus avold undue disgrace. —Black Pussy. Black Pussy the Cat had takem a great deal of interest In all that was going on In the Old Orchard. She |knew all about the feeding shelves there. She knew all about the shelf at the window of Farmer Brown's house. She watched those shelves from a distance, for she knew better than to go very near them. She had ftried that once or twice, and the lesson Farmer Brown’s Boy had given her was one she would not soon for- get. So from a distance she would watch the feathered folk and the squirrels at those feceding shelves, and the end of her tail would twitch with eagerness and longing. ‘When she could stand it no longer she would go over in another part of the Old Orchard hunting. There wasn't much to hunt there, but it gave her the satisfaction of hunting. It was on one of these hunting FOR THE AFTERNOON THERLE. trips that she REMAINDER OF THE SHE KEPT WATCH iscovered a little hole in the snow close to the trunk of & trec. One snift at that hole told Black Pussy all that she wanted to know. That was the hole of a mouse. Yes, 'sir, that was the hole of a mouse, One of the children of Danny Meadow Mouse had made that hole. The tail of Black Pussy _twitched more than ever. She crouched down on the snow with her feet gathered under her and fixed her eyes on that hole. Only the tip of her tail moved. That would twitch every now and then. She just couldn’t Keep it still. For the Temainder of that after- noon she kept watch there. But she kept watch In vain. The mouse who had made that hole didn't put so much as a whisker outside. After a while Black Pussy was forced to give up. But she didn't forget the discovery she had made. No, sir, she didn’t forget the discovery. When- ever there was nothing else to do she would go over and watch that hole. Twice as she appronched she saw a little’ gray form disappear in that hole. Ot course, Sammy Jay discovered what she Wwas doing, and Sammy took great dellght in spoiling her hunting by coming over there and screaming when he saw her watch- ing that hole. Whenever he dld that Black Pussy knew that it was useless to remain there. She would get up and walk away with as much uignity as she could.” But just as scon as she was sure that Sammy was no longer about she would return, Now, Black Pussy didn’t need that mouse. As a matter of fact she prob- ably would not have cul it if she had caught it. It wus the love of hunting that kept her watching that hole. “I'll get that fellow sooner or later,” she would say to herself. “Sooner or later he is golng to be careless, and when he is I'm going to be right on hand. That mouse probably thinks himself very smart, but he'll find that there are others quite as smart as he. I am a Breat bellever in patience. Yes, sir, I am a great bellever in patience. There is nothing ke being patient when walting for opportunity. That mouse doesn't know it, but he Is mine. Yes, sir, he is mine. I feel it in my bones, (Copyright, 1923, by T. W. Burgess.)
