And the crowded house was well repaid, too. Elsie Janis, herself; the President Players, Graham Velsey, Meyer Davis’ Le Para. dis Orchestra and Goldman's Band | constituted ‘a program pleasing in | every detail. Elsle Janis never fails to score here, but whenever the interests of the ex-service men are involved this | admirable actress soars to her great- est helghts. Her songs last night were sung with a zest and her impersona- tions were-especially clever. Impres- sions of Ethel Barrymore, Sarah Bernhardt, Fannfe Brice and Will Rogers were given by Miss Janis, each @ delightful offering. Such was her reception that this vivacipus actress might have held the stage all evening had she desired. The President Players, gugmented by Graham Velsey, acquitted them- selves well in the two acts given of George V. Hobart’s “Buddies.” Velsey jas Sonny, Henry Duffy as Babe, Elleen Wilson as Julle and Margaret McCambridge as Louise Maltland were especially apt. Miss Wilson was in good voice in her two Songs, Please Learn to Love” and “Hello Home."” Jazz .pervaded the nrogram of Le Paradis Orchestfa, but It was of the ~subdued kind. The. inevitable “Gallagher. and Shean” duet was pre- sented in a novel way by the Davis musicians. The hunting song by Goldman’s ilitary Band was particu- larly effective. The story goes like this: joseph Schwarz, who was the outstanding baritone with Company last season and who was engaged for this season, was married ring the summer to Mys. The honeymoon trip through Eurcpe, revisiting, some of he scenes of Mr. Schwarz's earlier cago comp When he did return | there were some fireworks in the office of Manager Shaw, and Mr. WAarz indignantly packed his trunks and returned to New York. Just at this psychologic moment a Rigoletto was needed for the Wash- ington Opera Company’s production which was booked at the President Theater January 22 and 26. Presto! There was the world's greatest Rigoletto free—and 8o now Washington i{s to have the treat of seeing and hearing Schwarz in this great impersonation with our own Washington Opera Company. Luella Melius, the brilliant young American coloratura, was under the exclusive management' of Jules Daiber. Mr. Daiber seemed to Mr. McCormick just the manager for his wife, Ganna Walska, so Mr. Daiber was acquired and ‘Mme. Mellus was left in chaos as to her: season. Or- dinarily she would be in the west, where she is popular and is hooked almost solldly for concert appear- ances. But she, too, was left with a few open dates, and S0 was avall- able for the role of Gilda, with the Washington Opera Company, which seems to be proudly swinging out into the ranks of the great companies of the world, and many believe that Washington needs a real opera com- | pany right here.
