Hugo Schoellkopf, denied In an authorized statement today that there ever had been a family dispute because of Frank B. Carman, Mrs. Schoellkopf's former dancing partner, who is held by the New York police, in New York, in connection with the robbery from Mrs. Schoellkopf on New Year eve of jewels sald to be valued at more than $200,000. Mr. Jellinek's statement said, in part: “Mrs. Schoellkopf's lavis dlsplay of her gems often brought protests from her husband, who cautioned her, as did her friends, that she was in- viting their theft. Belleved Too Tolerant. “Some of his friends have thought Mr. Schoellkopf too tolerant and 1ib- eral minded. difference in their ages. Carman today was held without bai charged with having alded two men, as yet unarrested, in committing grand larceny. He will be examined tomorrow. The police, after a search of Car- man's apartment on West 52d street, where the party was held, possible clue and that they were hunting for two men, residents of the | § apartment below Carman'’s, in which Mrs. Schoellkopt sald she had been robbed. This apartment, which Car- man had taken over from Fanny Brirce, actress, wife of Nicky Arn- steln, was sublet, according to the police, on December 8 to three actors. Inspector Coughlin, who has spent many hours questioning guests at the party, sald he hoped to pick up the trall of the gems. Detectives In- timaied that there might be other ar- rests before Carman was examined. Carman refused to make any state- ment at his arralgnment. LIEUT. STOTT BRINGS PRISONER FROM ABROAD Man Wanted Here for False Pre- tenses Was Captured in Portugal. After a 10,000-mile trip to Lisbon, Portugal, Lieut. W. G. Stott of the metropolitan police department ar- rived here last night from Providence, R. L, with Harry J. Cody., wanted here on an indictment charging false pre- tenses in obtaining money.from the International Finance Corporation. “We had a fine trip.” Stott said after his arrival. “Cody is a first- class traveling companion. He made no objection or no trouble on the re- turn trip. As a matter of fact, he intimated that he was glad to get back, because he was at an end of his funds.” The charge that Cody is wanted on involves the sale of a bill for collec- tion to the finance corporation call- ing for $1.300, approximately, for a shipment of sardines by a New York trading company. Officlals charged that when the corporation attempted to collect they found that the bill was in reality more than $500 less than this sum. OPERATION SUCCESSFUL. William E. MICHIGAN CITY, Ind., January 4.— Ku Klux Klan~ charges against Maurice Bowen, city manager; Arthur Snyder, a member of the city com- mission, and David Miller, city en- gineer, were pending beforé the Michigan city commission today. All three were named as members of the organization in an affidavit presented to the commission yester- day by Arthur M. Sullivan, former chiet of police, who demanded reasons for his requested resignation last Monday. “My discharge was caused by the fact that I refused to join the klan,” Sullivan_said. “The climax came when I refused to permit a parade of masked klansmen through Michigan City. “Conditions in Michigan City have become almost unbearable for per- sons not afliated with the klan. Night Capt. Thomas Grunt and four or five members of the police force have resigned.” DIES IN BASEMENT. Cabinet Worker, Long Ill, Found Dead After Days. The body of Jacob Polonsky, thirty- elght, was found in the basement of 600 K street last night by George Walker, colored, of 441 Prathers alley. Voight Measure Is Favorably Re- ported to Senate. The Voight “filled” milk bill, de- signed to prohibit manufacture of a compound made of skimmed nilk and cocoanut fat, was reported favorably Tuesday by the Senate agriculture committee virtually in the form in which it was passed by the House. A Senate committee amendment would exempt trade compounds manu- factured for Infant foods and dis- tributed to druggists, hospitals or disposal of larger quantities of skimmed milk.
