s OFTCOAL MINERS & WAIT ON CONTRACT Union Men Are Seeking Pro- | posal to Supplant Pres- ent Agreement. By the Associated Press. CHICAGO, January 4.—Union bitu- minous coal miners here to confer with operators on a natlonal wage and working rules agreement to re- Dlace that expiring March 31 today waited for a tentative proposal from the operators on the method of mak- ing contracts. The operators last night appointed ® committee of seven to draw up a plan for presentation to them goday at their session, called one hour in| advance of the joint conference. Indications were that the commit- tee would propose a method of pro cedure differing from any discussed in the two previous meetings of operat- ovs and miners here. Operators said they drew this canclusion from state- ments made by John L. Lewis, presi- dent of the miners, that district plans of settlement, a sliding wage scale and arbitration would not be accept- able to his organization. Several operators ventured the opinion that the conference would de- cide to return to the old central com- petitive fleld as a basis for negotiat- . ing with contracts extending the present agreement for one year. Both miners and operators admit- ted that their desire to reach an eement was stimulated by the at- titude of President Harding's fa finding commission on the meetings. It was reported that any agreement reached would be submitted to repre sentatives of the government for ap proval. §1,576,015 DUPONT TAX INJUNCTION SUSTAINED Collector of Interval Revenue Re- strained From Levying, But May Sue. By the As -ciated Press, P!HLADELPH!A, January 4.—The United States circuit court of appeals has sustained the injunction granted by Federal District Judge J. Whita- ker Thompson restraining the col- lector of internal revenue of Dela- | ware from levying on the property | of Alfred 1. du Pont to force the pay- ment of additional taxes of $1,576.015 by Dupont for the year 1915 The court of appeals also approved the ruling of Judge Thompson that the colluctor of internal revenue may flle a law suit for recovery of the taxes. The colleotor sought to compel du Pont to pay the taxes on a 200 per cent stock dividend of $26,245,065 he received @s a stockholder when the E. I du Pont de Nemours Powder Company, the New Jersey corpora- tion, transterred its affairs in 1917 to E. I du Pont de Nemours Company. the Delaware corporation. When the collector assessed the tax more than five years had elapsed since the divi- dend was declared, and du Pont maintained the government had lost the right to collect the taxes. On his refusal to pay the collector notified du Pont that his property in Dela- ware would be sold for the payment of the taxes. TAXI DRIVER ROBBED.
