6 SUPRENE COUNCL | HLLED BY ALLES British Editor Says Londom Parley Marked End of League Body. g DECRIES NEW ALLIANCE BY A. G. GARDINER, Britain’s Greatest Liberal Editor. By Cable to The Star. LONDON, August 26—The Euro- %pean plot thickens. One fact I8 clear—the collapse of the London conference has killed the supreme council. Premier Poincare interred the corpse with his Bar le Duc speech. What will follow the dissolution? The general advocacy by the Paris press of a continental alliance di- rected against England creates an extraordinary situation. On the one hand is Poincare dismissing the su- preme council on the ground that it is inimical to France's interests be- cause it refuses to enforce impossible reparations. On the other is the sug- gestion that all of continental Europe shall act as a unit in opposing Brit- ish efforts to revive her trade. Tt is seriously to be supposed that after her recent experiences (Germany would be reconciled to France sim- ply to make trouble for England? The idea of marshaling the continent inst England is “midsummer mad- ness.” It could only end in leaving France, with her great military ma- chine, confronted with the hostility of all the great nations—England, Germany, Italy and Russia. Even the supremacy of the French arms, sup- ported by inadequate to meet such a situation. Britixh Are Not Disturbed. Any attempt to marshal the conti- nent would find it not against Eng- land, but against France. The Eng- public is _undisturbed by hreat. It is simply regarded as a plomatic move to force Britain's :nd. We await the sequel of Poin- care’s threat that France will act alone in taking control of the Ger- is that he will not carry the into execution in the teeth of ilized opinion. The probable aim is to get England to cancel her French debts as the price for the French refraining from ng the Ruhr. It would pay England cel this debt if that is the only tablish _the stability of ope and to get France to disarm, eventually securing concessions. »m the United States. Organized Unemployed Folk Enter Third Aspirant for Seat. PLYMOUTH, August 26.—Organized unemployed persons have decided to nominate their leader, George Ebur: to gppose Lady Astor at the next el tion. He will be the second prosp tive opponent of Lady Astor, when the seat for the Sutton division of Plymouth in the house of commons is_contested. The other candidate is Dr. H. W. PARIS, August 26.—French secret service operatives last night arrested | a man closely resembling the noted radical Guenther, in_the bellef that he was an agent of the German “con- | sul” organization, sent here to assas- sinate Premier Poincare. He proved, however, to be a respectable French commuter and was released. The 'German in Parls said to be known as Guenther in consul circles is traveling under a false name and with false papers. He is thirty vears of age and dresses in the helght of fashion. He has blue eyes, chestnut- brown hair and speaks French like a native Frenchman. He now is sup- | posed to be hiding in one of the fash- fonable suburbs of Paris awaiting the chance to execute his mission. The French police are receiving hun- dreds of letters denouncing various suspicious characters since fears have been entertained of attempts on the ! lives of prominent men. Most of the suspicions prove to be Imaginative. The Guenther person, however, is taken serfously.
