Lbel 0 One foot on the brake is’ worth two on the accelerator. Art in Buying Gas. On the surface there wouldn't meem to be much art in buying gas ss long as the bankroll is fat. But the job of “filling up” is really quite complicated and worthy of serius thought. Any motorist who buys his gas always at the same place and fi same pump is quite likely to be getting short measure without knowing it. Changing pumps has of increases in mileage. Considering that many tanks are never inspected, this is easily understood, It goes without saying that the mo- torist should watch the pumping proc- ess carefully, though many drivers seem to think this can take care of itself. It isn’t always & matter of the gas dis- penser’s ethica; more often it is simply a case of unfamiliarity with the pump. 1t deesnt cost him anything to make the mistake of giving you four gallons instead of five. Most motorists have a feeling that they are annoying the dealer by watch- ing proceedings. They fear that he will try to sHp something over just because he is being watched. But that is a far cry from the truth. Gasoline dealers want to be watched, and this is one trick with unserupulous motorists is to drive up to a flling sta- tion, order a lot of gas and then dash off when the dealer's back is turned. Dealers have, therefore, come to sus- pect the man who sits at the wheel of his car with the engine running. He is likely to make off any minute—and there's no stopping him if he once gets started. e moral in this for the average motorist is that unless he shuts off his engine and appears normal the dealer s quite Tkely to hurry the filling process and unconsciéusly give short measure. A full right or left turn can be made with one downward pull on the wheel by the hand on the respective side. For ordinary driving it may be more com- fortable to keep the hands on the bottom of the steering wheel rim, but when tackling trafic_or a. winding road the top of tne wheel is best for top-notch steering. The officer who sees that the motorist has immedfately corrected his errot is much more likely to be reasonable. ok ok * Considering the long continuance of high-priced gasoline, it really would seem as though by this time all the purses of the purchasers should be dry cleaned, Copyright, 1922, by the Ullman Feature Service.
