‘SOCIETY. [ Mis§ MARGARET SKILLMAN of Jexas, wen{‘x‘y the guest of Senator and Mrs Morris Sheppard ‘Mr. and Mrs. Harding Housed Under Canvas At Gettysburg Camp Enjoying the Novelty of Improvised “White House"—Marion, Ohio. Planning to Re- ceive Presidential Party. SALLIE V. H. PICKETT. HE President and Mrs. Harding awakened this morning under a canvas roof. their first glimpse of the outer world reaching over the famous Gettysburg battlelield, the view offered being one of the most beautiful in Pennsylvania. was enthusiastic in her desire for the night under canvas. ior she is an ardent lover of outdoor life. and her knowledge of civil war history gives every inch of her historic habitation more than ordinary interest. - She i< a good. sturdy companion for the President. and went sensibly equipped * for the trip to Gettysburg and then to Ohio. She asks for no greater luxury than the ordinary camper or tourist enjoys. HE scene in Marion beggars description, if “letters from home™ are | not too vividly overdrawn, and the little city is fairly bursting with importance to have as an inhabitant once more. even for a short time. their President, who belonged to them before he belonged to the coun- tr . are going back_to Marion. and Ohioans motoring through the middle states are hastening to reach there by July 4. It is the first visit of the President and Mrs. Harding to their old home since the inauguration, and they arc thrilled with the prospect. QL‘ : in contrast to the glorious Fourth of the President and Mrs. Iarding will be that of the Vice President and Mrs. Coolidge. The Vice President will remain in Washington to hold down the lid, the Senate being scheduled for a session tomorrow. Tuesday is the birthday anniver- <ary oi Mr. Coolidge, wio was born at Plymouth, Vt. in 1872, and while the entire country is in a state of ceélebration, the Vice President will, as wsual, take the day quite coolly. John and«Calvin Coolidge are with their parents and undoubtedly will have an interest in the mild pyrotechnics of the capital, being able from the windows of the New Willard to see pretty much all that takes place on the Mall, without stepping a foot outside. RS. COOLIDGE, as chairman of the Senate ladies’ luncheon club, announces an unusually charnling party for Tuesday of next week, when Mrs. T. Coleman du Pont will entertain them on board the Tech, her husband’s beautiiul little vacht The affair will, as usual. be a picnic " luncheon party, with all the tradition of the regular affair at the Capitol i prevailing. even to the detail of the ladies carrying their own sandwiches. There are the usual groups detailed to supply the cake and other “good- ie<.” and the only difference is the added charm of a water trip on a Inxurious, up-to-date vacht. of 7th street. at 3:30 o'clock Tuesday afternoon, for the trip. HER e few dinner parties being given now, that at the White House Thursday night, which was of unusual political significance;! <everal small diplomatic dinners and small parties at the Chevy Chase, Country and Lock Tavern clubs, the Montgomery County Country Club + and the Congressional Club, covering the list. Next in importance to’the President’s dinner party was that at the New Willard Monday night, when the minister of Guatemala and Senora de Sanchez Latour entertained for the recently appointed United States minister to Guatemala and Mrs. ._I\xhuvi H. Geissler. who will sail from New Orleans for their new post uesday. NATORIAL days are not dull days in Washington, however, small and informal dinner and card parties, trips to country clubs and other informal wavs of entertaining keeping them cmployed socially. Senator George Wharton Pepper and his son-in-law, Mr. F. E. Newbold, are two of the senatorial set who are interested in tennis, and permitted by the President’s invitation to cross racquets on the White House courts. Miss Margaret Wilson was an ardent follower of tennis while her father was on the south iront lawn near the huge circular fountain, but in Roose- velt's time it was within sight of and just without his office windows, and is was there that he and the ambassador of France. M. Jusserand; the late German ambassador. Baron Spec von Sternberg; Gifford*Pinchot of Phil- B adelphia and others pulled off many strenuous games of tennis. The old i court is now the White House rose garden, where the rose trees of almost every known variety make it one of the show places of the mansion.
