Clayton McKin & : Down and Out T <> A down-and-outer, sadly pleading for rags and victuals he was need- ing, came to my door today; I staked him with a new suspender, and fed him henfruit fresh and ten- der, and seat him on his way. Be- fore he started forth to wander I gave him seven cents to squander in any w he chose; T said I thought a storm was brewing, and he agreed with 'me, while chewing his eggs and goods like those. When I was younger I'd have jawed him, my virtue would have overawed him, and spoiled his humble meal; but now I'm old 1 know that kindness is often ruined by the blindness of those who preach and spiel. I might have said, idiotic, vain and silly the course you've followed long! You would a0t be in such a pickle if you had alted dime and nickel when you were young and strong But when a man is starved and broken, the moral lecture loudly spoken but turns his blood to bile; when he is amply fed and re vou with a smile. And so I fed this eggs and gravy, and gave him seven cents; and when he left he burst | out singing, where, on arriving, he was bringing the new curves in la- ments. WALT MASON. (Copyright.) Solution of the problem of giving a forward motion to a helicopter has been effected by Emile and Henry A. Berliner, father and son. The ma- chine is making flights at College Park, but only goes about ten or twelve feet from the ground now, ac- cording to Egile Berliner. There are several other problems which will have to be solved before the machine is ready for a flight of any great height, Mr. Berliner said, and one of these ix the landing. It can get up all right, but the main problem now is to get down satis- factorily. This problem will be solved by a higher powered engine than is now used in the machine. Naval officers are much Interested in’ the machine, and it is expected that in several weeks Mr. Berliner will have it perfected so that it may be demonstrated to them. The forward motion of the machine is accomplished by a small tilting propeller installed on the top and rear of the fusilage. e REAL RELIEF FROM SUMMER HEAT With Horsford’s Acid Phosphate in water or fruit Juices.
