~ . THE EVENING éTAR, 'WASHINGTON, D. C.. THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 23, 1922, SENATOR DEMANDS RECALL OF HARVEY Reed Attacks American Am- bassador, Calling Him Eng- land’s Greatest Toady. By the Associated Press. : CHICAGO, February 23.—A denun- ciation of George Harvey, American amtassador to Great Britain, in which he urged that Ambassador Harvey be recalled and “his recent performances erased from the recollection of man,” was made by Senator James A. Reed of Missouri last night, in a speech be- fore the Chicago Council, Friends of Irish Freedem. “America has produced two great Georges— George Washington, _the father of his country, and George Har- vey, duly accredited ambassador to the court of St. James,” he said. ‘“Wash- ington was America's greatest patriot Harvey is England's greatest toady. Washington expressed the soul of America; Harvey the spirit of syco- phancy and - toadylsm. Washington addressed his country beneath’ the ~.aerican flag; Harvey spoke to an audience of ex-patriots, toadies, tories and nobles beneath the union jack of Great Britain. Washington sleeps in honor, his memory fresher with the passing years; Harvey ought to be re- called and his recent performances erased from the memory of man. Vision of Other Days. “As I survey the fleld of the present and listen to the words of an Amerl- | can ambassador, in substance demand- ing a union of America with the Brit- ish empire, and the continued insist- ence that America shall join herself in entangling alliances with the world when I consider the never-ceasing agl tation in favor of a union between the United States and the British em- pire, there arises before my mind the vision of other days. At such a time as this 1 summon the heroic spirits of the revolution. Come, Washington, and tell why you cried to God to break the tyrant's sword. Was it for this? That at the end of 150 years a duly accred- ited onvoy of the country you es- tablished should stand om British soil, beneath the very flag you forced vn, for a union, one and inseparable, of America and the British empire. Washington Agninst Alliances. “In 1792 George Washington said: “Why forego the advantages of our peculiar situation? Why quit our own to stand upon foreign ground? Why, by interweaving our destiny with that of any part of Europe, en- tangle our peace and prosperity in the tolls of European ambition, rival- ship, Interest, humor and caprice? “On February 21, 1 George Harvey, speaking of the relations which. he asserted, had been rgcently eéstablished between Great Britain and America through the Washing- ton_conference, said: *Not liberty alone, not unton alone, but liberty and union, one and in- separable, was the most striking dictum of America’s greatest senator JON'T et it get a start, Dr. King’s New Di: will get right <ough, gently stimulating the bowels, | on America’s greatest need, and such thus eliminating the cold poisons. | in fairly accurate parallel is the chief Always .~ Just raq‘l;iremen( gzl our t;lo ‘working and amade to ease colds coughs. trading countries today.’ to and I @6 mot preach hatred for the For fifty a standard remedy. | British, I preach love for America.
