i WOMAN’S PAGE. - SEEN IN THE WASHIN BY ELENORE DE WITT EBY. Fluffy organdy frocks have already made their debut in local shop win- dows, and their designs m to pre- dict that summer fashions will follow closely the lines used during the win- ter and spring. For instance, sleeves will be long and the peasant and mandarin models will be greatly fa- wored. Skirts will be bouffant in sil- houette, and although garment man- ufacturers are still endeavoring to lengthen them, they will probably be worn short. 'The American woman DAINTY FROCK OF ORGANDY TRIMMED WITH BABY RIBBONS. has not taken kindly to the edict of long skirts, but, on the contrary, her enthusiastic appropriation of knick- erbockers indicates that she will not always wear skirts, and when she does that their hems will not accumu- late the dust of the ground. But to return to organdy. A charm- ing little model of this material is sketched. It is demure and yet has touch of sophistication. for the hoolgirl whiteness of the fabric is colored by rows of applique baby ribbons in tones of light yellow SPORT SUIT_ OF GREEN WHITE SILK. gradually deepening into vivid or- ange. The bodice has a straight bateau neckline and sleeves pattern- ed in an original manner to give the impression of the peasant style. They are slashed in long strips from the shoulders to the wrists, where tight cuffs hold them In place. Each sepa- rate piece of organdy is ornamented ‘with shaded riboons, which run the entire length of the arm. Additional applique ribbons appear around the AND CALVERT COFFEE 'DELICIOUS . Tiny cro- chheted buttons fasten this plain waistband slightly to one side of the bow. A smart sport suit of bright green and white Canton crepe is also illustrated. It consists of a white blouse and accordion-pleated skirt and a short jacket of the contrasted material, which is woven in a pattern of small_squares of light and dark green. There is a large sailor col- silk ‘lar of white crepe on the jacket, and the bands_that face the front open- ing and edge the pockets are also of white. The sleeve cuffs are interest- ing, for they are attached only to one side of each sleeve, while the remain- ing part is suspended, giving the ef- of green silk, faced and tasseled with fect of an odd trimming. One of the new ‘“rainbow” sport hats of blended colors of silk strips, trimmed with a pompon or conventional flower, would be very attractive with the outfit. The hat pictured is one of those plain taliored little affairs that have a charm all their own when worn by the type of girl hest described as “piquant.” It is extremely youthtul and yet not juvenile, so that it would be especially suitable for the board- ing school miss. The crown is of shiny black straw and there is really no brim at all. However, loops of stiff navy blue grosgrained ribbon are turned up around the crown to glve the suggestion of one. A single tab of ribbon, fringed out at the end, hangs at one side to add the final smart touch. Banana and Tangerine Tarts. Bake some rich pastry on inverted tins. Prick the pastry in many places before baking. Make a sirup by using equal parts of peach liquid and sugar; in this scald some slices of banana, a few at a time; set these in the bottom of the baked pastry shells, then above these place other slices, one overlapping another, lengthwise of the shells; also arrange sections of tangerine oranges in the same manner. To a cup of the sirup add a tablespoon of lemon juice and half a dessertspoon of gelatin soft- ened in two tablespoons of cold water; when the gelatin is dissolved let chill and use to coat the fruit lightly. Honey Cakes. Put two heaping tablespoons of butter into a saucepan over the fire and when melted stir in half a pound of homey. Remove from the fire and when cool mix in_the grated rind of half a lemon, two heaping tablespoons of chopped almonds, half a teaspoon of grated nutmeg, two cups of flour and one level tablespoon of soda dis- solved in a small quantity of warm water. Leave the mixture in a cool place for twelve hours, then roll it out half an inch thick, cut it into round cakes and decorate with shred- ded almonds. Bake In a moderate oven for twenty minutes Walnut Cheese Balls. Work a small cream cheese until smooth and season with one-haif a teaspoon of salt and 2 few grains of paprika. Shape in balls, roll in sift- ed cracker crumbs, flatten and place halves of English walnut meats op- posite each other on each piece. Chemists are shown in the laboratory experimenting with test tubes, beakers and retorts and syn- thesizing soap in small quantities. A big kettle holding fifty tons of soft soap, into which go tallow, vegetable oil, resin and borax, is shown. Then the audience is introduced to “saponi- fication,” which is an outrageously long name for the simple process of Pouring lye into the soupy soap. Lye is to soap what the popular ralsin is to home brew. Without it there is no kick. Soap Has to Be Tasted. - Every cake of soap has to be tasted before it gets to the consumer. How'd you like to have that job—eating soap for a living? A man sticks a ladle down into the big kettle of soap soup and takes a taste to detect the pres- ence of free lye. It's an thing in the making of good soap. The soap is hardened in a huge frame and shot out in cakes about the size of blocks of ice. Each of these blocks makes 1,600 cakes of soap. Machinery automatically cuts the blocks into huge slabs, then into bars, and then into cakes; stamps a pretty name on both sides; and wraps each cake in paper. Each woman as she leaves the movie performance is given a full-sized cake of this soap, and many cakes are being given away. Georgetown Grocers’ Day.
