FORMER PRIZE FIGHTER AND LUMBERJACK WINS ADMISSION TO HARVARD By the Associated Press. CAMBRIDGE, Mass., February:16. —héderlck R. (“Kid") Wedge: of Prescott. Ariz., forty years old, former Iumberjack -and prize fighter, was admitted to Harvard University as a student of the Graduate School of Education yes- terday. He had come across' the country in freight clrl to register, only to find that he was uncei- tain of admission. Wedge's admission to jarvard marks the latest step in his fight for education. After battling his way out of the Wisconsin lumber camps by his boxing prow- ,es8, he became a fairly success- 'ful partictpant_in battles of the prize ring in Nebraska, Colorado and other western states. - Then, under the influence of the young worhan who became his wife, he turned to obtaining an education, securing a degree from the Uni- versity of Arifona and acting for a year as principal of a high school at Presgott., “Our delay in admitting Mr. ‘Wedge,” Dean. Henry W. Holmes of the Schodl of Education at Har- vard sald today, “has abso- lutely nothing to do with the fact that he was formerly =a prize- fighter. His remarkable ntrn‘ e for an education counted In B favor. ~ “The delay was due to other Qquestions concerning his - record ‘and “ qualifications which arose a¥ter he was originally informed last spring that he would be ad- mitted. Since Mr. Wedge's ar- rival in Cambridge, on January 16, { he has been kept informed of the progress of our ing given us assistance.
