By the Associated Press. with the Harding tonight joined with 'g 2 Edward ress in paylng henor to Page chief of the New York Herald, and the man on whose shoulders fell “‘the mantle of Charles A. Dana.” At. the twenty-first annual dinner of Amen Corner, an organization of news- paper mon, to which came 700 guests m many citles, there was read. a message from the owner of the Marion Star, sent from the White House, .ex- pressing regret that he could not be present and asserting that Mr. Mitchell bad been inspiration and an object of both his admiration and affection. 4 President's Tribute. “‘His career covers the beginnings, the development and the acting present of the great era of metropolitan journal- ism in the country,” the President's message said. “In all its stages, he has been a leading and dom|nllln:°rrtlcl' pant, and the best of all the gt things that may be said for him Is that he has always stood for the finest newspaper ideals and the most unselfish and pa- triotic public purposes. “I wish some of his stories, particy- larly some of the whimsical bits of old- time reporting that he did, were better known and that that unique institution, ‘The Sun Story,” were more frequently a model for present-day newspaper writers. “I hope I may say this, in my ca- pacity as one of you newspaper men, without seeming to preach from a presidential pulpit.” Greatest, Says Harvey. A message from George Harvey, bassador to the court of St. J. saluted Mr. Mitchell as “the greatest writing journalist, bar none, the world has ever produced.” Former Gov. Martin H. Glynn of New York, editor of the Albany Times- Union, paid this tribute: “‘Greeley made the editorial, nett made the news column, but Dana blended the spiciness of the one with the charm of the other, and therein lies the magic compound of the Sun, and in this blending it is difficult to tell where Dana leaves off and Mitch- ell begins. “What Dana put into the Sun, Mitchell helped put there; what Dana put in the Sun, Mitchell kept there when Dana was no more. They both believed the newspaper should be founded on human nature; they both believed that what Providence permitted to occur no editor should be too proud to print; they both believed every hu- man being is interesting, whether clothed -with the rags of a pauper or the panoply of power." —_— SLAYER OF DETECTIVES STILL ELUDES POLICE Chifforobe Your choice of oak or mahogany finish; guaran- teed construction.
