C., TUESDAY, DECEMBER 6, 1921. - CANADIANS HOLD ELEGTIONS TODAY 235 Representatives to Four- teenth Parliament to Be Chosen. By the Assoclated Press: OTTAWA, Ontarlo, December 6— Canadian voters from Windsor, On- tario, to the northernmost settlement of Yukon territory and from Halifax, N. S, to Vancouver, B. C., went to the polls today to elect 235 rchresenta- tives to the fourteenth Canadian par- liament. The polls opened at 6 a.m. and will close at 8 p.m. Tho thirteenth parllament, elected in 1917, was dissolved in Septcmber last, and during the past two mouths 2 strenuous campaign was carried on by the leaders of the three contending Frem the best of pork|parties, with the tariff as the principal and the purest of spices issue. Premier Melghan, head of the government party, sought re-election for his followers on a policy of pro- tection, warning the electorate to pre- vent “economlc demination” of the Dominion by the United States. Tari® Big Issue. “Tariffs for revenue only,” was made the keynote in the addresses of ‘W. L. Mackenzle King, liberal leader, and T. A. Crerar, head of the pro- gressive forces. The opposition par- tles also urged a renewal of negotia- tions for a reciprocity agreement with the United States. Women voted with full equality with men for the first time. Many thousands of women voted in the election of 1917, but woman suffrage that year was limited to wives, moth- ers, widows and sisters of soldiers and 1 women engaged in war work. Meighan Comservative Leader, Premier Meighan assumed the lead- ership of the conservative forces upon the retirement of Sir Robert Horden, who resigned in July, 1920, on account of ill heaith. The strength of the last government, which had the support of 153 of 235 seats in the house of commons, has been considerably re- duced by seventeen bye-elections which have been held since the thir- teenth parliament was organized. This parliament was elected as a unionist parliament to carry on the war under the leadership of Sir Robert Borden. Much interest attached to the pro- spective strength of the agrarian party (progressives), headed by Mr. Crerar, which has grown steadily during the past three years and at present con- trols the Ontario and Alberta legisla- tu;es. o air weather was enerall; - dicted. 3 i —_— MESSENGER BOY SUSPECT IN A $75,000 ROBBERY Arrests Follows the Mysterious Disappearance of Package Con- taining Gold Certificates.
