THE WILLYS- KNIGHT New York Symphony. The New York Symphony Orchestra. Walter Damrosch conductor, gave a Program of Wagmer music yesterday lftornool in the National Theater which was well chosen and ene of unhackneyed gelections. The prelude to the “Mastersinzers” was in strik- Ing contrast to the “Slegfried Idy! which immediately followed. The latter, beautifully played, waa deli- cate in pianissimo. The former was played with well bulit crescendos. Two excerpts from “The Rape of the Gold, finale, when “God Thor Creates the Rainbow Bridge Upon Which the Gods Enter Valhall” and “The Lament of the Rhine Maidens,” were given. with Henrletta Conrad, Rachel Mor- ton Harris and Frieda Klink as the maidens and Fred Patton in the parts of Alberich, Thor and Wotan. it was excellently done, the voices blending well and each was well suited to the music. The “lament,” however, sung from behind the scenes, where it was evidently difficult to hear the harp accompaniment, was not so good. As a whole, however, a veritable feast of music was provided. Mr. P.tton sang_ “Wotan's well,” from “The Valkyrie, Free from Care ‘The Willys-Knight, with the Sleeve-Valve Fare- which show the richness and beauty of his baritone voice. He has much dra- -| matic ability. His voice was even and his tones rich and mellow. His enunciation greatly enhanced the charm of the music. The orchestra rllyed in its usual excellent style, although there wer: times when the song was lost In the orchestration. The third concert of this serier will be given December 13, witl arguerite d'Alvares, dramatic so prano, as soloist. At this concer Mr. Damrosch will make his last ap yearance before sailing for Europe where he will conduct symphony con certs In England, Franoce and Switzer and, and a “‘guest” conductor wii ake his place in this country.
